Trauma Program
The mission of the OHSU Trauma Program is to provide the highest quality and cost effective care
to critically injured trauma patients throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. This mission is
accomplished through a comprehensive program of research, resident, nursing, and rural provider
education and community outreach/prevention activities.
Research: The OHSU Trauma Program maintains an active clinical and basic science research program
which continues to improve the trauma care delivered to all Oregonians. Researchers at OHSU have
provided groundbreaking data that supports the belief that trauma systems development and
implementation improves the outcomes of trauma patients. Other researchers are actively involved
in evaluating and improving the outcome of patients with severe traumatic brain injury. Clinical
trails of new therapies and medical devices are ongoing daily through the OHSU Trauma Program.
Education: The OHSU Trauma Program is actively involved in the education of interns, residents
and medical students in trauma care. In addition to this ongoing medical education program,
the Trauma Program sponsors the annual "Northwest States Trauma Conference" which provides trauma educational
opportunities to physicians, nurses, paramedics and other healthcare providers from rural areas
in Oregon and surrounding states. Trauma surgeons, Emergency Medicine physicians and nurses
travel throughout Oregon providing dozens of trauma case reviews and lectures for referring
hospitals and their staff.
Community Outreach and Injury Prevention Activities: The OHSU Trauma Program is committed to reaching out to the surrounding community through injury prevention education and interventions. The Trauma Program collaborates with Think First, the head injury prevention program based withinthe Department of Neurology to sponsor community health fairs and bike helmet distribution
programs.
