2005 Annual Report Summary Statement

Oregon Health & Science University is a Level I trauma center designated by the Oregon Department of Human Services: health services, emergency medical services & trauma systems. OHSU is a regional tertiary care trauma center serving Oregon and Southern Washington. OHSU’s trauma registry is an electronic database containing information on characteristics, treatments and outcomes of trauma patients treated at OHSU. This annual report is a summary regarding trauma patients admitted between January 1 and December 31, 2005.

  • In 2005, the Trauma Service treated 2,210 patients at OHSU. This is 226 patients more than in 2004.
  • Of the 1,401 patients admitted to the hospital, over 62 percent were treated in an ICU.
  • 618 patients were transferred to OHSU from other hospitals.
  • 340 patients were admitted to the Emergency Department’s Observation Unit.
  • The median injury severity score for the 2,210 patients was nine, an increase from the median ISS of eight in 2004. The trend during the past four years has been that each year more seriously injured patients are admitted to OHSU.

The Trauma Service was busiest during the summer months, during the evening hours and on weekends.

  • Patients seen by the Trauma Service had a wide spectrum of injuries.
  • Ninety-two percent of patients had a blunt mechanism of injury.
  • Motor vehicle collisions were the most common cause of injury in the OHSU trauma patient population (54.5%).
  • 182 had a penetrating injury; 84 percent of these patients were male.
  • Forty-three percent of injured patients admitted to OHSU required surgical interventions during their initial admission. There were 1,970 surgical procedures in 602 patients in 2005. In many cases, patients come back to the hospital for additional operative procedures that are not accounted for in this report.
