Position Description
Position Purpose
The Trauma Coordinator is responsible
for ensuring that all aspects of contract with the State
of Oregon for Level 1 Trauma Designation are met and to
assure that the Program is meeting the mission of University
Hospital and Doernbecher Hospital and Clinics.
The position encompasses the responsibilities of a Trauma
Coordinator(clinical coordination, professional and public
education, consultation, research and quality management)
as well as the role of Trauma Case Manager. This multi-faceted
role is accomplished in collaboration with the Trauma Coordinator
group using a self-directed work team model. The Trauma Coordinator
reports directly to the senior Trauma Coordinators.
Functions/Duties

- Administration:*15% Assists in hiring new staff.
Coordinates the development, implementation, review and revision of Trauma
Program standards, policies, procedures and protocols. Manages trauma web
site. Assists with trauma site survey preparation.
- Clinical Coordination/Case Management*50%: Supports appropriate,
cost effective, high quality patient care of trauma patients by overseeing
the patient's inpatient stay. The TC is directly responsible for the patient's
discharge plan and for the Utilization Review (UR) for the trauma population.
Facilitates the efficient provision of trauma care by monitoring patient charges,
identifying opportunities for improvement. Provides cost information to members
of the Trauma Team. Coordinates trauma patient services to decrease duplication
and inefficiency. Works with the Trauma Medical Director to create efficiency
initiatives such as practice guidelines, critical paths and protocols.
Other duties of the Clinical Coordination/Case Management role include:

- Consultation with nursing staff to answer questions
and solve problems related to the clinical care of the patient or operations
of the Trauma Program.
- Providing education and support for patients and families
by giving them written educational materials and by facilitating family conferences
with members of the trauma team.
- Facilitating the request for financial assistance for
patients without resources.
- Communication with referring hospital/outside agencies/
insurers. Providing written follow up communication to the referring hospital
and prehospital providers. Serves as the hospital liaison for law enforcement
agencies.
- Utilization Review by providing information to and obtaining
authorization for hospitalization days and discharge services from the patient's insurer.
- Active participation as a Trauma Team member by rounding
daily with the team, responding to the
Emergency Department as available for Trauma Team Activations, participating in Trauma
Breakfast/Journal club and attending weekly Trauma Conference.
- Directs and Overseas the Trauma Administrative Coordinators.
- Completes the Tracking Records for the trauma registry
abstraction in a complete and timely fashion.
- Works collaboratively with trauma nurse practitioner and with
other trauma case manager providing thorough report.
- Professional & Public Education:*15% Manages the public trauma
education/injury prevention programs. Serves as an educational resource to prehospital
care providers by attending case presentations at their request. Participates in the
OHSU Hospital, Doernbecher Hospital, and Marquam Hill activities as requested. Coordinates
hospital trauma educational programs, including the annual trauma nursing conference and the
annual Northwest States Trauma Conference. Coordinates and teaches in the OHSU trauma
outreach programs. Serves as an instructor in the OHSU School of Nursing. Publishes or
presents at national or regional conferences on a regular basis. Assists in the identification
of patient and staff education needs and coordinates educational opportunities. Actively participates
in local, regional, and national nursing/trauma professional organizations.
- Consultation:5% Mentors other Trauma Coordinators/Case Managers in the State of Oregon and
surrounding referring states. Serves as a trauma nurse site surveyor. Provides on-site
clinical consultation for nursing staff at OHSU.
- Research:5% Participates in research required to fulfill the Level I Trauma
Center Designation. Encourages interdisciplinary research and assists in its coordination.
Mentors nursing staff involved in trauma research. Encourages the application of current
research into clinical practice.
- Quality Management:*10% Identifies opportunities for improvement through concurrent
patient rounds, multidisciplinary patient rounds, and discussions with patients and families.
Works with the trauma Medical Director to manage the Trauma QM Process. Develops QI teams in
response to significant trauma systems issues and patient care trends. Actively participates in
the OHSU trauma-related QI meetings including Trauma Conference, Trauma Committee, Trauma Peer
Review Subcommittee, and Department of Surgery Mortality and Morbidity Conference. Represents
OHSU as a member of the Systems Audit group of ATAB-1.
Knowledge and Skills: Individual must possess the ability to be
self-directed and function autonomously. Must have strong organizational skills, interpersonal
skills, and communication skills. Must have the ability to work collaboratively in a self-directed
work team environment. Must have the ability to handle diverse responsibilities concurrently. Must
have proven leadership skills.
Education and Experience: Must be a graduate of an accredited school
of nursing and licensed to practice in the State of Oregon. Baccalaureate degree in nursing and
relevant masters degree(nursing preferred) is required. Must have a minimum of five years of trauma
clinical experience in either the Emergency Department or Critical Care.
