Kidney Transplant 40th Anniversary

On Nov. 19, 1999, the OHSU Kidney Transplant Program celebrated more than four decades of saving and vastly improving the quality of patients' lives through transplantation. All OHSU kidney transplant recipients were invited to an evening program and reception. Health Care Systems Director Tim Goldfarb served as master of ceremonies for the festivities, which featured

• Joseph Murray, M.D., who came out to Oregon in 1959 from Harvard University to lead the kidney transplant surgical team;
• Clarence Hodges, M.D., who as chairman of OHSU's Department of Urology in 1959 headed the local surgical team;
• Charlene Hamilton, the then-13-year-old girl who received a kidney from her identical-twin sister, Charlotte;
• Peter Kohler, M.D., president of OHSU;
• John Barry, M.D., chairman of the Department of Urology and Division of Abdominal Transplantation; and
• Douglas Norman, M.D., director of Transplantation Medicine and the Immunogenetics Laboratory.
