A browser is the software that enables you to see or hear Web pages. Internet Explorer, Netscape and Opera are popular graphical browsers, and Lynx is a well known text browser. Blind and many vision-impaired individuals surf the Web by using screen readers (Jaws, IBM) and other types of nongraphical browsers.
We have tried to ensure this site is accessible and that all users can read or listen to it. Toward this end, it has been designed using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS2) and other techniques in support of Web and accessibility standards. This means you may have to upgrade your browser to get the most out of the site. You will need Mozilla Firefox 1.0, Opera 5 or newer, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or newer, or Netscape 6 or newer to view the site optimally.
Look at the top of this screen. Above the buttons will be a series of menus, and at the far right is one entitled, "Help." Click on that and go to the bottom menu item. Depending on your browser, it will read something like, "About Internet Explorer," "About Communicator," or "About Opera." Click on that item, and the next screen will show you what version you have. If you need to upgrade, here are some popular browser sites:
Please contact the Web designer at shepherd@ohsu.edu if you encounter any difficulties. If you can be as specific as possible concerning which pages or sections presented problems for you, this will greatly assist us in resolving any issues.
The OHSU Transplant Program web site is straightforward in design, and is divided into four levels:
All pages, regardless of level, feature an image map navigation bar at the top that links to Level 1 pages. Text links to Level 1 pages, the OHSU Transplant home page and the Oregon Health & Science University home page are at the bottom of each page. Alt-text descriptions accompany all hotspots, navigation buttons and graphical images.
The OHSU Transplant Program home page is available in both graphic and text-only versions. It contains navigational links to Level 1 pages in two places: Text links are embedded vertically in a table on the left side of the page and horizontally at the bottom of the page. All images except for noncontent images (borders and spaces) are accompanied by Alt-text descriptions, and the text version of the page includes a full description of graphics used.
Across the top left of the home page is a three-tiered rectangular image map. Text contrasts against a dark background. The top row reads: "Oregon Health & Science University," "OHSU Home," "Site Map," "Search" and "Intranet." The last four of these labels link to the page or site identified. To the left of the second and third rows is a square that reads "OHSU," which links to the OHSU home page. The second row reads, "About OHSU," "Health Care Services" and "Academic & Students." All these link to the referenced topics or programs, as do the bottom row labels: "Research Programs," "Regional Outreach" and "Library & Info Services."
Below this are the page head and subhead, "Transplantation at OHSU: Leading the Northwest for 42 Years." To the left of the page head is Leonardo da Vinci's famous sketch of the proportions of the human body showing how the outermost points of the fingers and feet, from arms and legs fully extended in space, create a perfect circle around the body. Beneath the page head are links to sections within the same page.
The page now divides into two columns: On the left are navigation links to Level 1 pages, and on the right is narrative text. At the top right is a photographic collage.
At the bottom of the page are text links, a copyright and update statement and e-mail link contacts.
The following are Level 1, or major section, pages: "Kidney," "Liver," "Heart," "Pancreas and SPK," "Lung and Heart-Lung," "Life After Transplantation," "Transplant How-To's," "News," "Links and Resources" and "Site Map." Beneath the primary head and to the right on each main organ page is a small "at-a-glance" table that highlights key data for that program.
There are several Level 2 pages; five of these feature lists of organ-specific transplant clinical team members. Level 2 pages also feature a graphic representation of the page's contents at the top right, beneath the main head.
On the clinical team pages, each doctor's name is an active link to a short biography of that physician or surgeon (from the OHSU Health Web site). Links to other Level 2 pages originate on the News and Events page, each of these links pointing to a page highlighting a specific event or topic.
