Technology Overview

The voltage dependent anion channel (VDAC) proteins are the major pathways for metabolite flux through the outer membrane. These mitochondrial membrane proteins control the flux of anions through voltage gated mechanisms. VDACs have been shown to be important in apoptotic responses and linked to certain neurodegenerative diseases.

In order to study Human voltage dependent anion channels (HVDACs) these investigators have developed yeast strains expressing HVDAC1 and HVDAC2. These strains can be used for screening small molecules against the HVDACs in an in vitro manner.

Michael Forte is a senior scientist at the Vollum Institute and a professor in the Departments of Molecular and Medical Genetics, Cell and Developmental Biology, and Physiology and Pharmacology in the School of Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University.
