ATLAS & ATHENA: Athletes Training and Learning to Avoid Steroids & Athletes Targeting Healthy Exercise and Nutrition Alternatives

ATLAS (Athletes Training & Learning to Avoid Steroids) targets male adolescent athletes use of anabolic steroids, alcohol and other drugs and use of sport supplements, while improving healthy nutrition and exercise practices. ATLAS has a team-centered design, which provides a non-stigmatizing atmosphere, such that content can be gender-specific and address etiologies and risks of substance abuse unique to male adolescents.
ATHENA (Athletes Targeting Healthy Exercise & Nutrition Alternatives) is a school-based team -centered prevention program for female athletes on middle and high school sports, dance and cheer leading teams. The curriculum is eight 45-minute sessions delivered to a team and integrated into their usual sport training activities. No new class hours are required. ATHENA uses scripted lesson plans, is peer taught and coach facilitated.
