Presenters' Corner

This page contains some resources for anyone preparing a presentation for the WIN conference. This will hopefully offer some help to improve the quality of the presentations. Instructions on submitting your PowerPoint file to the conference is after the links to the tips.

Writing a WINning Abstract

Marty Lentz, University of Washington, gave a highly useful presentation, entitled "Writing a WINning Abstract" to graduate students at a recent WIN conference. She has graciously given permission for the PowerPoint presentation to be placed on the Presenter's Corner to assist authors with preparation of an abstract.   View PowerPoint file

"Yes, it is Possible: A Research Report in 10 Minutes" Video and Slide Presentation

Marty Lentz has graciously made available a video entitled, “Yes, It is Possible: A Research Report in 10 Minutes!” This video is in QuickTime format, and will need an appropriate player. The PowerPoint presentation accompanies the video file. This presentation is provided with the permission of the University of Washington School of Nursing and Marty Lentz, speaker.   View video   View PowerPoint file

Tips for PowerPoint

Dave Paradi is allowing us to link to several of his pages. Some of these are specific to PowerPoint presentation, but others are of general use. Note: Mr. Paradi's site is commercial, and clicking these links may pop up windows to buy training. WIN is not affiliated with Mr. Paradi, nor makes any endorsement of his product.

Poster Presentations

WIN will provide posterboards (8 feet wide X 4 feet high) for the poster display. Tables will not be available, so your poster should not be prepared in a “stand-alone” format. Push pins will be available at the conference. If you have special requirements for push pins (ie, color), please bring your own pins.

Due to the large number of accepted poster abstracts, each poster will be on display for a half day on April 17, 18 or 19. The posters have been grouped into themes for each half day. Conference participants may view the posters at their discretion. Coffee breaks will be served in the poster area, so you should plan to be at your posterboard especially at those times. The times of the breaks and lunch hours will be printed in the conference hand-out.

A map of the poster display areas will also be included in the conference handout. Each poster presentation will be listed by day of presentation, title and authors, and will be assigned a number corresponding to the posterboard assignment in the poster display area. Posters must be hung on the assigned boards. NOTE: Please hang your poster ONLY on the date and time and on the posterboard assigned. If you place your poster on an unassigned board or hang it at an incorrect time or day, you will be taking the place of another poster presenter and your poster will be removed.

The poster display area will be available for set-up at 12:30 PM on Thursday, April 17. Those assigned to morning poster sessions should plan to have their posters assembled and set up by 8:00 AM on the day you are assigned to present. Those posters must be taken down by 12:15 PM. The afternoon poster sessions should plan to assemble their posters between 12:30 - 1:00 PM, and remove the posters by 5:15 PM on Friday and by 12:15 PM on Saturday.

Awards

WIN will give three poster awards at its annual meeting to recognize outstanding quality and presentation of a research, educational, or practice project. These awards are:

To be eligible for judging, posters have to be displayed for the entire assigned poster session and then be available for the finalists' session. Teams of judges will rate posters at each of the 3 poster sessions. During each session, the reviewers will pin a “finalist” ribbon on the selected finalist posters in the WBPA, WBSPA and WBR&IEPA categories. All finalists are to return and put up their posters at a designated location in the poster area from 12:00 – 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 19, 2008 for the final award judging. The judges will then review the finalists and select an award winner in each category. The results are given to the WIN Chair to announce at the afternoon session. A monetary award will be made to each finalist and to each award recipient.

How do I know in which category my poster will be rated?

  1. The online abstract submission program included a question about whether the project was done while the submitter was a student. Your response to that question will result in your poster being judged in the WBPA or WBSPA category.
  2. For those who submitted through the Research & Information Exchange option for educational or clinical agencies, the posters will be judged in the WBR&IEPA category.
Handouts

If you prepare handouts to accompany your presentation, please make about 75 copies. It is difficult to say in advance how many conference attendees will view your poster. Please make sure the handouts have the title of your study, your name and organizational affiliation at the top. You might want to include your email address so participants can contact you later. The duplication and cost of the handouts are the presenter's responsibility.

Electrical Equipment

If you are planning to use any electrical equipment, please bring an extension cord with you. Please notify the WIN office no later than Friday, March 28, 2008 if you need any special equipment. Those requesting the equipment will bear the rental cost.

Suggestions for Making Posters
  1. Prepare posters so they are readable from a distance. All lettering should be at least 3/8 inches high. Consultation with a media expert is strongly recommended.
  2. Keep labels and captions brief.
  3. Limit the amount of content on the poster so the viewer can easily see and understand the information. Too much detail may mean the information will not be read.
  4. If you have a series, indicate the sequence to be followed by numbers, letters or arrows.
  5. For maximum effect, make your poster visually interesting by the use of color and design.
  6. For helpful information about poster sessions, refer to:
