The Academy holds an annual meeting in conjunction with the WIN Assembly/Communicating Nurse Research Conference. Members of the Academy are eligible to serve on the Western Academy of Nurses Selection Committee. Membership in the Western Academy of Nurses requires individual WIN membership.
NOMINATION GUIDELINES
- Each nominee must have a sponsor and a co-sponsor. The sponsor and the co-sponsor must be WIN individual members or be from a WIN member agency.
- To be considered complete, each nomination will include the following: a completed Western Academy of Nurses Nomination Form, and statements of support from both the sponsor and co-sponsor. The sponsor and co-sponsor statements must describe in no more than 500 words each why the nominee is qualified for membership in the Academy.
- Each of the statements from the sponsor and co-sponsor
should provide evidence of the nominee's abilities
and accomplishments in the areas of practice, research,
teaching and/or scholarship as well as indications
of support for the objectives of the Western Institute
of Nursing (WIN). Each sponsor may not know all
aspects of the nominee's professional accomplishments
and may elaborate on different attributes. However,
the two statements together should present as many
accomplishments of the candidate as possible. To
assist the selection committee in making an informed
decision about the qualifications of the candidate
for membership in the Academy, the following guidelines
are provided:
- Excellence in practice. Give examples of the nominee's demonstrated clinical excellence as a registered nurse and/or advanced practice nurse. Include appropriate evaluative statements or comments from peers, supervisors, consumers and others to support specific abilities, accomplishments and evidence of caring.
- Excellence in teaching. Provide evidence of the nominee's excellence as a faculty in nursing education, continuing education or other teaching situations, invited lecturer or as a developer of outstanding teaching materials. Briefly include your evaluation and that of others to support the nominee's ability to communicate ideas and assist the learner in the educational process.
- Excellence in scholarship. Provide examples of the nominee's demonstration of scholarship that have contributed to professional nursing. Describe ways in which contributions were made – e.g., formal research as an investigator; consultant or mentor for others involved in research; utilization of research to improve practice, teaching or administration; support provided for others, or publication of results of research; or ideas for practice or teaching or conceptual formulations that indicate critical thinking.
- Evidence of continuing support of the mission and goals of WIN. Provide data to clearly show the nominee's involvement in WIN activities. Include participation on committees, involvement in projects or attendance/presentation at WIN conferences. If known, give some indication of the quality of presentations and ways in which the nominee has supported the goals of WIN. The nominee does not need to have held elective office.
- Materials, such as vitae, articles or other materials not included in the criteria for a completed nomination, will not be considered.
- Five copies of the completed nomination packet including cover letter, nomination form along with the 500-word statements from the sponsor and co-sponsor must be received in the WIN office by 4:30 PM ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2006.
- A sponsor may nominate more than one person. Separate packets must be submitted for each nomination.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
- The nominee must be a registered nurse who is a current individual member of WIN.
- Nominations must provide evidence of outstanding
contributions to nursing practice with significance
beyond one's regular or expected job responsibilities,
such as:
- Efforts or projects that have enhanced or promoted excellence in nursing practice;
- Successful implementation of creative approaches to nursing education;
- Substantial research efforts that have resulted in significant improvement in nursing care or health care delivery.
- Nominations must provide evidence of continuing support for the mission and goals of WIN.
SELECTION PROCESS
The Academy's Selection Committee will review all nominations and select those to be inducted into the Academy. Committee members include: Yeou-Lan Duh Chen, Tina DeLapp, Julie Johnson, Susan Mattson and Heather Young. All the sponsors and co-sponsors will be notified of the decision of the selection committee by January 2007. The sponsor of each of the individuals selected for Academy membership will have the opportunity to notify the award recipient prior to the notification by WIN.
