SPOTLIGHT ON BEST PRACTICES: OPPORTUNITY FOR SHARING AT THE ANNUAL WIN RESEARCH CONFERENCE
The Western Institute of Nursing invites you to participate in a session: “Spotlight on Best Practices.” The purpose of this session is to highlight the use of a data-based innovation to improve patient care. Through this kind of session, clinical agency representatives will have the opportunity to present their work and interact with others to share and discuss ways to further the use of this and other evidenced-based approaches in day-to-day nursing practice.
Concept of Best Practices for the WIN Session
Definition of “Best Practice”: For the purposes of this WIN session, “Best Practice” is defined as the development of an innovation based on research-based evidence and its implementation and evaluation to improve the quality of patient care. Improving the quality of patient care through the use of an evidenced-based practice has the aim of achieving one or more of these benefits: increased safety of care delivery, increased sensitivity to patient (individual, family or community), efficacy, effectiveness, and/or cost effectiveness.
Concept of “Spotlight on Best Practice” Session: a designated context to gather people for the exchange of information through the use of a table poster, handouts and discussion of an evidenced-based best practice implemented at the presenting institution. Sharing the implementation of an evidenced-based practice in one setting provides the impetus for discussion of practical application in other clinical settings.
Goal of the “Spotlight on Best Practice” Session: Create a forum for the collaborative exchange of information on the ways nurses are applying research findings and/or methods to improve the delivery of patient care in clinical settings.
Presentation Logistics: The opportunity to share best practices in the clinical setting will be part of the scheduled poster sessions. Within the session there will be a way of designating the best practice presentations from the regular poster presentations. Each agency will be assigned to one of the poster session and also be assigned an identified table for the convener(s) to display materials. The title of the best practice topic/presentation will appear in the program with a table number so conference participants can easily find the presentation to view and discuss with the convener(s).
Presentation Requirements: In sharing your work on the use of a Best Practice for this WIN session, please address these five areas:
- Delineate the evidence/research findings serving as the basis for your practice change or innovation. Include a reference list of the studies that comprise your evidence.
- Describe how you have modified or adapted the evidence to apply and/or use it to fit your patients and clinical context.
- Describe the methods you have used or are using to evaluate the proposed benefits of your “best practice.” A quality improvement framework or other evaluation methodology can be the basis of your evaluation. Please give consideration to including as benefits or outcomes not only patient health status, but also more consumer oriented ones such as satisfaction, as well as the impact of this practice on cost of care and staff outcomes.
- Present findings of your evaluation to demonstrate the effects and benefits of your best practice on you selected outcomes.
- Describe what you have learned from developing, implementing, and evaluating the use of a best practice to improve clinical.
