Description:

Nursing has been slow to integrate informatics competencies into nursing practice and education.  Yet, these competencies are no less than imperatives for basic functioning now and into the future. Both the DNP and BS essentials documents require informatics content; functioning in the workplace requires the application of informatics competencies. Confusion exists about the nature and extent of informatics education required by nurses, as well as the appropriate content at differing levels of nursing practice.  Also, the delivery of informatics content can be integrated across courses as a curricular thread, or delivered in dedicated coursework.

This workshop describes the state-of-the-art in defining, integrating and evaluating nursing informatics competencies for nurses in education and clinical practice. The first section of the workshop describes requirements for informatics in clinical practice and education, provides an overview of contemporary competencies development, and offers current resources for nurses. The second section of the workshop describes the application of salient informatics competencies to the design and delivery of an informatics course for doctoral students.  The third section describes the integration of informatics as a core component of master of science in nursing education. The novel approaches used to satisfy doctoral and master’s level essential informatics requirements are shared, and evaluation approaches are discussed. This workshop dispels the myth that informatics is only for specialists and provides the tools needed to incorporate informatics into every nurses’ skill set.
