Speaker Bios
  1. Faculty Development in Simulation Pedagogy (10 AM – 5 PM)
    · Patricia Ravert, RN, PhD: Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs, Nursing Learning Center and Clinical Simulation Laboratory Coordinator, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah
Dr. Ravert has been using high-fidelity simulation since 2001 and has facilitated many simulation sessions. Her work has also involved integrating high-fidelity simulation sessions across the baccalaureate curriculum. She is currently one of nine national experts working on the National League for Nursing/Laerdal Medical simulation project (Simulation Innovation Resource Center), authoring an online interactive course on integrating simulation into curriculum. Dr. Ravert served as the BSN Representative on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) from 2004-2008.

    · Susan Prion, EdD, RN is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of San Francisco. She is actively engaged in research about situated cognition, clinical microsystems and clinical simulation experiences for undergraduate and clinical nurse leader master's-entry students. She is a co-recipient of a 2008 Debra Spunt Research Minigrant awarded by International Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL), a USF Jesuit Foundation award to fund an investigation about standardized patient training with acting students, and a USF Faculty Grant for a research project to describe student behaviors in a clinical setting compared with a simulation.

    · Suzan Kardong-Edgren PhD, RN, is an assistant professor at Washington State University, in Spokane, Washington. She has published several articles on simulation and simulation research. She is the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Simulation in Nursing, the journal of the International Association of Clinical and Simulated Learning. Dr. Kardong-Edgren is the Project Manager for a national multi-site, multi-arm study evaluating better ways to teach CPR and ACLS for the American Heart Association and Laerdal Medical Corporation.

    · Mary Cato MSN, RN: Oregon Health & Science University, Simulation and Clinical Learning Center, Lead Simulation Specialist
Mary Cato has been a simulation specialist at OHSU since 2004, and has worked with nursing students as well as other health care professionals utilizing simulation. She has a master’s degree in nursing education and has been teaching in both hospital and education environments for over fifteen years. Mary has participated in research related to the development of clinical judgment in nursing students, and has written and presented on this topic. She is one of the authors of the NLN/Laerdal Simulation Innovation Resource Center. In addition, she has been active in training simulation specialists through her work with the Oregon Simulation Alliance (OSA).

    · Mindi Anderson, PhD, RN, CPNP-PC is an Associate Professor and Simulation Coordinator at UT Arlington School of Nursing. Mindi is currently one of nine national experts working on a project for the National League for Nursing/Laerdal Medical, the Simulation Innovation Resource Center (SIRC) Project. For this, she has authored an online interactive course on Debriefing/Guided Reflection. Mindi has been the co-principal investigator on two Laerdal Foundation grants and has published multiple articles on simulation. She presents frequently on simulation at both national and international conferences.

    · Allen Hanberg, PhD, RN, The University of Utah, College of Nursing, Assistant Professor (Clinical), Simulation Learning Center Academic Advisor
Dr. Allen Hanberg has been teaching nursing by means of simulation since 2002. He has been a member of the faculty at the University of Utah since 2007, where he is the Simulation Learning Center Academic Advisor. He received a PhD in Nursing Education, with a doctoral minor in Statistics from the University of Northern Colorado in 2008. While his recent research has focused on integrating simulation in nursing curricula, he is also interesting in evaluating communication within the simulated environment and its effect on patient safety. Additionally, he is interested in the use of simulators and simulated electronic health record systems for teaching informatics competencies.
