The following WIN members were honored in 2008 for outstanding contributions in the respective award categories.
DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH LECTURESHIP
The Distinguished Research Lectureship recognizes a senior researcher whose research efforts have made significant and sustained contributions to nursing. The 2008 award recipient was:
Clarann Weinert , SC , PhD, RN, FAAN , Professor, College of Nursing , Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana .
CAROL A. LINDEMAN AWARD FOR A NEW RESEARCHER
The New Researcher Award was established in 1976 by Carol A. Lindeman to support nursing researchers early in their careers. In 1987, the award was renamed to recognize Dr. Lindeman for her contributions and support of colleagues. In 2008, the award was given to:
Cecelia I. Roscigno, MN, PhC, RN, CNRN , Predoctoral Research Fellow and UW LEND Trainee, Department of Family & Child Nursing, School of Nursing , University of Washington , Seattle , Washington .
ANNA M. SHANNON MENTORSHIP AWARD
The Anna M. Shannon Mentorship Award was established in the name of the former Dean and Professor of the College of Nursing , Montana State University – Bozeman who unselfishly supported and promoted the professional growth of other nurses in the West. The 2008 Award recipient was:
Nancy L. R. Anderson, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor Emeritus; Director, Participatory Research and Community Partnership Core, Center for Vulnerable Populations Research, School of Nursing, University of California Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California.
JO ELEANOR ELLIOTT LEADERSHIP AWARD
The Jo Eleanor Elliott Leadership Award was established in 1988 by Jeanne Kearns, former Executive Director of WIN to recognize outstanding leadership on the part of members and staff in WCHEN/WIN. This award is named for Jo Eleanor Elliott in recognition of her outstanding leadership while serving as the Director of Nursing Programs at WICHE and the Executive Secretary of WCHEN from 1957 – 1980. The 2008 Award recipient was:
Marie J. Driever, RN, PhD , Director of Professional Practice and Development, Group Health Cooperative, Seattle , Washington .
REGIONAL GERIATRIC NURSING RESEARCH AWARD
The Western Institute of Nursing, in partnership with the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing, sponsors this award to recognize an outstanding nurse researcher(s) and to foster and showcase geriatric nursing research. Awards are presented to an established and a new nurse researcher. Recipients of the award in 2008 were:
Senior Researcher:
Colleen Keller, PhD, RNc, FNP , Professor and Director, Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, Center for Healthy Outcomes in Aging, College of Nursing and Healthcare Innovation, Arizona State University, Phoenix, Arizona.
New Researcher :
Elena Siegel, PhD, RN , Assistant Professor, School of Nursing , Oregon Health & Science University, Portland , Oregon .
WESTERN ACADEMY OF NURSES
The Western Academy of Nurses recognizes and honors nurses who have demonstrated excellence in nursing practice and who have advanced nursing in direct care, education, or research. Inducted into the Academy in 2008 were:

WIN – AMERICAN NURSES FOUNDATION JOINT AWARD
Research Grant Award:
Martha Driessnack, PhD, PNP , Assistant Professor, College of Nursing , University of Iowa , Iowa City, Iowa ; and graduate, Oregon Health & Science University . The title of her paper is “Exploring what Children Know about Genetics.”
