NINR Preconference Scheduled on Grantsmanship Workshop

The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) will present a workshop titled, “Introduction to Research Grantsmanship for Early Career Nurse Scientists,” at the 2011 WIN Conference
on April 13, 2011. The preconference is tentatively scheduled for 12:00 – 3:30 PM and will be repeated at 4:00 – 7:30 PM. This workshop will clarify the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
grant application process and provide key strategies for improving NIH grant funding success. Presenters will include NIH funded researchers, Extramural Program Directors, Scientific Review Officers, and Grants Management Specialists.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Determine the best mechanism, Institute designation, and study section for an NIH grant application;
• Avoid common NIH grant application pitfalls;
• Interpret summary statements generated by the scientific review process;
• Formulate a plan to revise an NIH grant application; and
• Design a research trajectory based on NIH funding opportunities.

2011 WIN Conference to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada
“Transitions: Unifying Practice, Education, and Research to Improve Health”

WIN’s Annual Communicating Nursing Research Conference will be held on April 13–16, 2011 at the Rio All-Suites Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. The Call for Abstracts will be issued around the middle of August 2010. We have been pleased to work with the Las Vegas Local Planning for Las Vegas to serve as the venue for the 2011 Annual Communicating Nursing Research Conference. We are planning another annual conference that will present timely information and the opportunities for networking that you value. We invite you to join us to create another energetic conference full of valuable interchanges.

The conference will feature exciting and important plenary presentations:

The keynote will be given by Michael Bleich, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean, School of Nursing, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, OR. Dr. Bleich served as a committee member of the Initiative on the Future of Nursing. The Institute of Medicine (IOM), in collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, produced a transformational report on the future of nursing, scheduled for public release on October 5, 2010. The committee was tasked to find evidence that would aid in: 1) reconceptualizing the role of nurses within the context of the entire workforce, the shortage, societal issues and technology; 2) expanding nursing faculty, increasing the capacity of nursing schools and redesigning nursing education to produce an adequate number of well prepared nurses; 3) examining innovative solutions related to care delivery and health professional education; and 4) attracting and retaining well prepared nurses in multiple care settings. Dr. Bleich will present key findings as they relate to advancing nursing science and the contributions that nurse researchers must embrace to meet societal demands.

Three State of the Science presentations have been defined and will be presented by:

 Nancy Staggers, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor – Informatics, University of Utah College of Nursing, Salt Lake City, UT, on the general topic of informatics and the relation to care outcomes;
 Amy Barton, PhD, RN, Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Clinical and Community Affairs, University of Colorado College of Nursing, Denver, CO, on the general topic of Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) and its implications for nursing education; and
 Joyce Verran, PhD, RN, FAAN, Research Professor, University of Arizona College of Nursing, Tucson, AZ, on the general topic of cutting edge methods in complex environments.

The conference will be held at the Rio Hotel just off the Las Vegas Strip. A shuttle runs from the Rio to related properties on the Strip every 20 minutes. WIN has been sensitive to those with allergies or sensitivities when selecting the conference hotel. The hotel meeting rooms are in a different section of the hotel than the casinos. Newer laws in Nevada prohibit smoking in public areas, except for casinos. However, most of the large casinos have non-smoking areas as well. The Rio has a door near the convention center that opens directly to the outdoors. The conference facility and sleeping rooms are inviting and smoke-free hotel rooms are available.

The entertainment on the Las Vegas Strip is well known. But, if that’s not the experience you are seeking, there is much to see and do in Las Vegas and in Nevada, including shopping, cultural activities and scenery. A Performing Arts Center housed on the nearby campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas has a concert hall and two theaters. Hoover Dam and Lake Mead are about 40 miles from Las Vegas; the beautiful Red Rock Canyon is located 15 miles west of Las Vegas; and the Valley of Fire State Park is about 45 minute outside Las Vegas.

Please watch the website. Additional conference information is coming soon.
