Learning at The School of Nursing

Relying on Technology and Innovative Teaching/Learning Approaches

The School of Nursing relies on traditional face-to-face classroom environments that many students are familiar with. However, our School has students and faculty located on four campuses across the state of Oregon and throughout the Pacific Northwest. Because of the distance between participants in our classes we rely on technology to make connections. The combination of technology, distance, and a diversity of faculty and students means that some of our classroom experiences will look and feel different for students.

Many of our courses are using a competency-based approach to teaching and learning. This approach is adult and learner-centered and focuses on the outcome of learning or what a student will be able to do at the end of the learning process. Read more about competency-based, adult-centered learning from a student perspective.

What’s Your Learning Style?
Our School of Nursing learning environment also considers student’s individual learning styles. A learning style is the predominate way or combination of ways through which all of us tend to learn most effectively. You can complete a free learning style self-assessment by going to this web site: http://www.vark-learn.com/english/index.asp
Click on the questionnaire link and follow the simple instructions. You will receive immediate feedback and resources that tell you about your learning style, what the other learning styles are, and how to make the most of this information.

Many of our School of Nursing classrooms use technology that includes computers, the Internet, videoconferencing, databases, simulation labs, and CD-ROM. Most of this technology use is part of everyday modern life. We incorporate it’s use in our classrooms to connect across distances and because in reflects the world our students will be working in.
Using Technology for Teaching and Learning

Many of our School of Nursing courses use a course management system called eCollege to connect to students and faculty throughout the Northwest. When you register for a course using eCollege you will receive an email giving you the information you need to connect to your online courses.
