HIPAA

It's important that HIPAA be completed as soon as possible so an email and network account can be assigned to you and your background check can be performed.

The HIPAA course can be accessed either inside or outside OHSU's computer network, and offers either a low band (dial-up) or high band (DSL/cable) format, depending on the user's Internet connection. Due to load times, the low band version of the course does take longer to complete than the high band. Both versions contain the same content, but the low band version has simplified multimedia elements. The course is protected by an SSL certificate, which means that all information transmitted is secure. “Privacy and You” is copyrighted and is only for use by OHSU personnel and authorized associates. All course completions are tracked and logged in a tracking database.New personnel and those returning from leave must complete HIPAA training within 30 days of beginning/resuming work. Those who fail to do so are subject to corrective action. Completion of HIPAA training is federally required. If you have questions or problems with the program, you may direct them to hipaaed@ohsu.edu.

“Privacy and You” Login Information

FOR NEW STUDENTS:

If you are a new student, please choose Get Started | Register Here, then choose New OHSU Student - student ID not assigned. The trainings will require approximately two hours total to complete. You may save and continue later as necessary.

1. When the course launches it will check your computer to see if you have all the software you need. This may take a few minutes, especially if you have a dial up connection. If you do not have a plug-in called Flash 6.0, you will automatically be taken to a site where you can download it free of charge. Occasionally this does not work as it should. The direct link to the Flash download site is: http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&P5_Language=English

2. Once you have logged in you will be asked to choose either the high bandwidth or low bandwidth version of the course. You should only choose the high bandwidth version if you have a high speed (DSL/cable) Internet connection. If you have a dial up (phone line) Internet connection, the high bandwidth version of the course will not run on your computer. For other system requirements, see http://www.ohsu.edu/cc/hipaa/sysreq.shtml

3. Answer the questions at the beginning of the course.

4. Proceed with the training.

5. That’s it. Estimated time of completion is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes for the broadband version of the course. Times for dial up users will be longer, and will vary depending on the speed of their Internet connection.

6. Completion of this course will be automatically logged in a tracking database.

7. You must complete this course within 30 days.

8. If you have any questions or problems, contact the OHSU Help Desk at 494-2222, or send an email to hipaaed@ohsu.edu . You can also see our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) at http://www.ohsu.edu/cc/hipaa/edfaq.shtml

9. Go to https://bigbrain.ohsu.edu/ to begin your training.

FOR CURRENTLY ENROLLED STUDENTS:

Connect to the Internet, open your Internet browser, and go to http://www.ohsu.edu/cc/ed/bb/.
At the log in screen, enter your student ID number. Your student number is the nine-digit code assigned to all students in OHSU’s student database. In many cases it is the same as your social security number, although some students have an alternate number assigned. If you don’t know your student number, check with your academic advisor.
