Welcome to OHSU's Nurse-Midwifery web site! Here you'll find information on the Nurse-Midwifery program and practice resources from OHSU's nurse-midwives.

Carol Howe, Program Director Nurse-midwifery has had a place at OHSU since 1975 when the first Certified Nurse-Midwife was granted medical staff privileges. Since that time, nurse-midwifery practice has thrived, and an American College of Nurse-Midwives accredited nurse-midwifery educational program has taken its place among the excellent graduate level offerings of the School of Nursing.

Through this site, you may access additional information whether your interest is in midwifery education as a student or the midwifery faculty practice as a patient. For those interested in nurse-midwifery as a career, there are a variety of paths you may take, depending upon your educational background. Licensure to practice as a CNM in Oregon requires a master's degree in nursing or a related field, so all routes ultimately lead to graduate level education.

  • If you are an RN with a BS, you will want information about the Master's program with a nurse-midwifery specialty.
  • If you have a bachelor's degree (or higher) in another field, but are not an RN, check the graduate entry program site.
  • If you are an RN with an associate's degree or diploma, our RN-BS site will help you to find the fastest route to BS completion, in preparation for application to our graduate program.
  • If you are a high school graduate just beginning your career planning, you will find information on the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) helpful.

The faculty members of the nurse-midwifery educational program also offer clinical services through the OHSU Center for Women's Health. Full-scope maternity services as well as routine gynecologic care are available on the OHSU campus and at our Sellwood-Moreland office.

The Community Health Nurse Resource web site was made possible by a grant seeking to strengthen specific areas of OHSU's nurse-midwifery program, namely curriculum and the teaching process. This web site was created to offer resources to Oregon's community health nurses serving vulnerable women, particularly Hispanic women, through education, direct service and indirect service.

If you have questions regarding nurse-midwifery educational programs or practice outside of Oregon, the American College of Nurse-Midwives site (www.midwife.org) provides information about the profession nationally.

The members of the nurse-midwifery faculty are available to answer any additional questions you might have. All of our faculty members can respond to inquiries regarding the faculty practice or nurse-midwifery practice in general.
