Marks of Distinction
The School of Nursing RANKS IN THE TOP 10 SCHOOLS OF NURSING NATIONALLY, according to U.S. News and World Report.
The School of Nursing RANKS EIGHTH IN NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH nursing research funding.
The School has achieved THREE FORMAL CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE:
- The John A. Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellece — one of five such centers nationally
- Center of Research for Symptom Management in Life-threatening Illness
- Center for Healthy Aging — a university initiative housed in the School of Nursing
The School developed the ONLY PHD PROGRAM FOR NURSES IN OREGON, with formal regional access links to Montana, Utah, and southern Washington.
The School is LEADING THE NATION IN THE STUDY OF THE ROLE OF PREVENTION AND PATIENT-DRIVEN PRIMARY CARE in a collaborative nurse coach model through the federally funded study, the Healthy Aging Project.
The School’s midwifery practice PROVIDES MIDWIFERY CARE FOR MORE THAN 350 LOW-INCOME HISPANIC WOMEN and their families each year. The MS program in midwifery is ranked #1 in the nation by US News & World Report.
The School developed the HEALTH NETWORK FOR RURAL SCHOOLS IN UNION COUNTY, a program in which 5 school districts share a team of health professionals who deliver primary and preventive health care services on a rotating basis to 2,000 children and their families. This new model is being evaluated closely by the State of Oregon Department of Education to determine its potential to be replicated in other rural areas.
The School operates TWO COMMUNITYBASED CLINICS RUN BY NURSE PRACTITIONERS IN EASTERN OREGON, providing the only primary care available in these isolated areas. The Union Family Health Center serves 3,000 patients, and the Elgin Family Health Center serves 1,500 patients.
The School’s ONLINE DEGREE PROGRAMS make it possible for nurses in rural Oregon to advance their degrees while continuing to work at home where they are needed.
The School is OREGON’S PRIMARY PROVIDER OF NURSE PRACTIONERS who provide cost-effective primary care often in underserved areas.
A key member of the School’s faculty led the FIRST COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT AND DOCUMENTATION OF THE NURSING SHORTAGE IN OREGON. “Oregon’s Nursing Shortage: A Public Health Crisis in the Making” was published by the Northwest Health Foundation.
