SCHOOL OF NURSING CREATES NEW DIRECTOR POSITION TO LEAD PROFESSIONAL AND DIVERSITY DEVELOPMENT

Charla Hayden, M.A., has been appointed the director of the office of professional and diversity development, a new position at the School of Nursing, effective June 2. In the spring of 2002 Hayden moved to an assistant professor position at the School from OHSU Human Resources, where she was manager of the training and development division. The primary focus of her new position is enhancing and sustaining an integrated and diverse community of learning among all School of Nursing members. She will also lead the School’s efforts in recruiting and retaining an effective and diverse student body, faculty and professional staff. The newly created office of professional and diversity development will be a new resource for all School community members to explore further development of their professional and academic interests and skills. Hayden will be joined in this task by Carol Terhune, J.D., M.A.O.D., as assistant director, and other faculty and staff. Hayden will also continue to teach courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs at the School.

Hayden has extensive professional experience in organizational design, team building, long-range planning, program evaluation, group facilitation, and individual training and development. She has provided consultation in organizational design and team-building to many organizations, including The John A. Hartford Foundation in New York, The Sequoia Center in San Francisco, Northwest Health Foundation in Portland, Ore., the School of Occupational Therapy at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., and many others. Hayden has also presented at numerous conferences and forums on authority and responsibility in groups and organizations, as well as publishing in the same field. She has been a member of the A.K. Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems for more than 30 years, and is currently serving as the chair of the institute’s training and certification committee for group relations consultants.
