NURSE MIDWIFERY GRAND ROUNDS AT OHSU

OHSU School of Nursing's nurse midwifery program is pleased to announce OHSU Nurse Midwifery Grand Rounds. Nurse Midwifery Grand Rounds is a new program from the number one ranked nurse midwifery program in the nation. The Grand Rounds features the northwest's leading midwifery faculty, clinicians, and experts in women's healthcare, discussing the latest research and evidence-based trends in clinical practice.

OHSU Nurse Midwifery Grand Rounds meets the first Tuesday
of every month from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.
and is open to all who are interested. Midwifery students and faculty, OB residents, and labor and delivery staff are especially encouraged to attend.

Topic: Why can't I get pregnant? Initial infertility evaluation and treatment

Speaker: Kathryn Hill, MS, RNC, WHCNP

Ms. Hill obtained her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Rhode Island College in 1977 and her master's of science degree and women’s health care nurse practitioner certificate in 1997 from Oregon Health Sciences University.

She has worked in the field of reproductive endocrinology since 1987. After earning her nurse practitioner certificate, she has held a position in both a private reproductive endocrinology practice and at the Oregon Osteoporosis Center and has served as a clinical instructor and preceptor at Oregon Health Sciences University graduate nursing program. She obtained national certification through NCC as a reproductive endocrinology nurse in 1991 and as a women’s health care nurse practitioner in 1998. Ms. Hill has presented lectures and research abstracts at national and international meetings on a variety of women’s health care topics since 1989.

Speakers: Carol Howe, CNM, DNSc, FACNM

Dr. Carol Howe is Professor and Director of the Midwifery program at the Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing. She is also currently serving as interim Director of Advanced Practice Nursing programs. She received her baccalaureate nursing education at Texas Woman’s University in 1971 and her master’s degree and midwifery education at Yale University in 1974. Dr. Howe came to OHSU in 1974 and established the first nurse-midwifery practice in Portland. After completing her doctoral education at the University of California San Francisco in 1981, she established the OHSU graduate education program in midwifery, which is currently ranked #1 in the nation. She is the past president of the American Midwifery Certification Board (formerly the ACNM Certification Council) and has served on numerous national professional committees. In addition to her School of Nursing responsibilities, Dr. Howe also serves on the Board of Directors of OHSU Medical Group and the OHSU Faculty Senate.

Speakers: Mary Carpenter, CNM, FNP

Mary is a Certified Nurse-Midwife and Family Nurse Practitioner at the Center for Genetics and Maternal-Fetal Medicine in Eugene, OR. A graduate of University of Illinois with a Master's degree in Midwifery, and OHSU with post-master's family nurse practitioner certificate, Mary traveled to Liberia in May and June of 2006. There, she served as a volunteer consultant with the American College of Nurse-Midwives to implement the Home-Based Life-Saving Skills Training Program.

Topic: Holistic Pelvic Care: Enhancing Post-Partum Recovery

Speakers: Tami Kent & Beth Yohalem-Ilsley

Tami Kent, MSPT, is a holistic women's healthcare provider, as well as mother and writer. Tami maintains a womens’ health private practice in southeast Portland. With a master's degree in physical therapy and the ability to read energetic patterns of the body, Tami provides a bridge between the realms of modern medicine and traditional women's wisdom. She is lead author and researcher for a scientific study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Tami has advanced training in multiple bodywork techniques, a specialty in women’s health, and certification in Infant Body Psychotherapy and Birth Trauma Resolution. She received her Masters from Pacific University and her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from University of California at Berkeley.

Beth Yohalem-Ilsley is a licensed acupuncturist with a Master’s degree in Science and Acupuncture and a post graduate certificate in Chinese Herbal Medicine from Bastyr University in Seattle, WA.
She was an intern at Shanghai University Hospital in China, specializing in gynecology and traumatology. Beth has over 13 years of experience in treating musculoskeletal conditions and extensive training in Muscle Energy Technique, Holistic Pelvic Care and Cranio-Sacral Therapy. Beth focuses in treating chronic pain and women's health. A mother herself, Beth works with all phases of
post partum recovery and assists new moms with the transition from self to mother.

PeaceHealth Birth Center in Eugene, OR is operated by CNMs and accredited by the American Association of Birth Centers. This talk will focus on the challenges of keeping this unique birth center going.

Speakers: Susan Armstrong, CNM & Penni Harmon, CNM

Susan has worked as a CNM since 1990, when she graduated from Yale's Nurse-Midwifery Program. She has lived in Oregon since 1995, and been with PeaceHealth since 2003.

Penni Harmon also graduated from the Yale Nurse-Midwifery Program in 1980, after which she had a home birth practice in Eugene and a practice in New York state. She now practices here at OHSU.

Topic: Perinatal Bereavement

Speaker: Patricia Lee Schwiebert R.N.

Pat Schwiebert has been working in the area of bereavement for over 25 years. She facilitates the Brief Encounters Support group for parents whose babies die. She also facilitates other groups for those who interrupt their pregnancies for medical reasons. She is Director of Perinatal Loss/Grief Watch, a non-profit program devoted to providing education and resources to bereaved parents and to professionals involved in the care of bereaved parents. She is author of many publications on the subject, and has produced several video productions for parents facing perinatal loss.

Topic: Abuse During Pregnancy: Why it is Unique
The experiences of women who were abused during pregnancy will be used to describe how this time period is unique and why approaches for screening and intervention must be developed that are specific for the perinatal period. Data from qualitative and quantitative studies with over 1000 pregnant women provide the basis for the presentation.

Topic: "The value of Low Interventive Birth- Why Bother? Helping women Cope with the Challenges of Natural Labor"- As the cesarean birth rate and the use of epidurals increase midwives are often asked "Why bother experiencing all the pain and effort of labor? What's the point?" Formulating an answer is challenging. If midwives can't answer the question, who can?
Speakers:
Nora Tallman and Catherine Schaefer both began attending births in1978. They went on to become Naturopathic Physicians and have had private practices for over 20 years, providing care in out-of-hospital birth, early pediatrics and women's health. In 2001 and 2002 they came back for more academic work and graduated from OHSU as Nurse Midwives. They have developed a birth class called The Inner Work of Birth that focuses on emotional and psychological preparation. Their book on this subject is currently in the process of co-creation.

She will be presenting on the Centering work that is happening through the Clackamas County Community Health Division. Laura Jenson is first-year graduate-entry nurse-midwifery student at OHSU. Laura has worked with the Centering program at Inverness Jail in Portland since 2004 as both class facilitator and doula.

BIO:Kathryn has been involved in the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
(REI) field since 1987 when she joined the University of Vermont IVF program
as the IVF nurse coordinator. She earned her Reproductive Endocrinology and
Infertility Nursing NCC certification in 1991. In 1995, she left Vermont to
move to Portland, Oregon to attend graduate school at Oregon Health Sciences
University where she earned her MS degree and WHCNP certificate. Her
research interests focused on maternal attachment in women conceiving
pregnancies through IVF. After graduation, Kathryn joined the private
practice of Laura Greenberg in 1997 and became nationally certified as a
WHCNP in 1998. She has been an active member of the American Society of
Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) since 1987 and past-chair of the Nurses'
Professional Group, one of the professional groups of ASRM. She has
presented numerous times at this group's national conference as well as
other local, national and international conferences.
