$1.75 Million Grant Aims to Help Latinas Battered by Their Partners

There may soon be more help for Latina women who are victims of intimate partner violence. A $1.75 million, four-year grant has been given to the Oregon Health & Science University Center for Health Disparities Research to develop improved interventions to reduce the health disparities among Latinas who are battered by their partners.

“Latina Americans have disproportionately higher rates of poverty, stresses related to acculturation and discrimination, and higher vulnerability to intimate partner violence than European American women,” said Nancy Glass Ph.D., M.P.H., R.N., assistant professor, OHSU School of Nursing and co-director of the center. Global Perspectives in Public Health Nursing: The Experience of Thailand

OHSU School of Nursing External Programs is now proud to offer "Global Perspectives in Public Health Nursing: The Experience of Thailand". This three-credit independent study course is a cultural immersion experience that targets public health in Thailand and will be approached from a variety of perspectives. It is being offered in cooperation with Mahidol University in Bangkok (a WHO Collaborating Center), which will organize all learning experiences, and will provide all in-country services including accommodation, meals, and transportation. Learning experiences will include: observations of the Thai health care system in public and private settings, community and university clinics, and centers for Thai traditional medicine; didactic seminars on alternative medicine therapies, the role of nurse practitioners in Thailand, and overviews of the Thai health care system; as well as opportunities to meet leaders of nursing and Thai students in both formal and informal settings. Field trips to points of cultural interest will also be included as are opportunities for weekend trips outside of Bangkok. The course consists of three weeks in Thailand, a pre-departure workshop, and a re-entry workshop and presentation to a SON assembly. This course will take place between fall and winter quarters from December 10, 2004 - January 1, 2005. The course is open to anyone interested in public health, with registration priority given to OHSU nursing students. For more information, go to:
