This
month in Nursing eNotes: May 2003
(go to past archives) This year the weeklong celebration of nursing began May 6 and commences May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. The week of celebration is a time to not only to give thanks to the many nurses who have touched your life, but also to remind the nation of nursing’s many contributions to the health of our communities. Take some time to thank your fellow nurses for their commitment to “lift spirits and touch lives.” Especially in these challenging times, nursing matters. OHSU School of Nursing thanks you. Read about how nurses around
the nation and OHSU are celebrating National Nurses Week at: We were sorry to learn of the death of Betty Gray, one of the School's greatest, most generous champions. While Mrs. Gray and her family have preferred to keep their involvement in the School very private, she has played a tremendous role in the success of the school over the years. Mrs. Gray will be missed greatly by many. Our thoughts and prayers remain with her family. “It was part of her
belief about what wealth was for—that it was about giving it away
and doing good rather than for piling it up,” as one of her friends
told The Oregonian. To read more about Mrs. Gray, go to: The School of Nursing recently completed its most successful fundraising Phonathon to date, raising $96,000 from more than 1,000 alumni. When compared with the 2002 Phonathon, this effort represents a 10% increase in dollars raised and a 58% increase in new alumni donors. A special thanks to the alumni who took the time to talk with OHSU nursing students and made generous pledges to the School. The School of Nursing is
extremely grateful that alumni are stepping up to the level of increased
leadership necessary to reach the School of Nursing's ambitious goals
as part of "The Oregon Opportunity” campaign. Those who wish
to make a gift online or to learn more about the School of Nursing priorities
as part of the campaign can visit our giving Web pages at: “From now on we will
be providing a bathroom pass for the nurses…” View the Nurstoons at: Vaginal illumination system, ophthalmoscope, hospital stretcher, blood pressure cuffs, Peter PICC line, male pelvis model…. It might not be a standard
shopping list, but this equipment is needed by the School of Nursing for
its clinical and educational programs. The School now has a new online
wish list so you can help fill these needs. For a complete equipment list,
estimated prices and a donation form, go to: Be a contact for students
and alumni to help them think about a nursing career in a particular specialty
area. The OHSU School of Nursing
Alumni Association is kicking off its Mentor Program and we are looking
for alumni volunteers for this very important and fun role! To make a
difference in a student or alum’s life, read more at: For more information about OHSU School of Nursing, visit the Web site at: http://www.ohsu.edu/son To share a story idea for future Nursing eNotes, e-mail sonnews@ohsu.edu Update your mailing address
