Watch for the 2004 Issue of Nursing Progress: A New Age of Nursing—Innovative Perspectives

This year has been a year of significant innovation in nursing education, practice and research at OHSU. As the articles and commentaries in this year's issue of Nursing Progress illustrate, individuals experience change and innovation in very different ways. From the School of Nursing alumni who now teach future nurses, to the new nursing student who is placed in an ambulatory care setting her first term of nursing school, to the member schools of the statewide collaborative effort called the Oregon Nursing Consortium – individuals are experiencing the impact of change.

Nursing Progress 2004, A New Age of Nursing—Innovative Perspectives will be in the mail soon! Here's a taste of what is included in this year's issue:

New Models for Medical Learning: Simulated patients help teach students an array of clinical tasks

(Business Journal – March 19)

In the dawning era of health care education, high-technology mannequins will help train the next generation of medical professionals, who are in increasingly short supply. The models, already in use at the Oregon Health & Science University schools of medicine and nursing, are the evolution of the Resusci-Annie dolls used to teach CPR. The simulated patients breathe, speak, and, with the help of advanced computer programs, can be used to teach students clinical tasks that include responding to heart attacks, giving injections and inserting urinary catheters. Today's Loss Leads to Tomorrow's Opportunity

On March 5 the nursing profession lost a champion with the passing of Susan Elizabeth Spangler. Susan was a true teacher in work and in life. She graduated as a family nurse practitioner from the OHSU School of Nursing La Grande campus in 1995. Her teaching career at OHSU progressed from Instructor to assistant professor. In addition to teaching, she worked at the student health clinic at Eastern Oregon University. Susan supported the OHSU School of Nursing both personally and professionally and was a role model to her students and colleagues. AACN Joins with Hundreds of National Organizations to Cosponsor “Cover the Uninsured Week,” April 19-23

There are nearly 44 million Americans without health coverage, including 8.5 million children. For the second year, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing joins “Cover the Uninsured Week” organizers to curb that number and raise awareness about the impact of an underinsured America. New Online Resource to Address the Nation's Shortage of Nurse Educators

Recent American Association of Colleges of Nursing data show that more than 11,000 applicants were turned away from baccalaureate nursing programs last year due primarily to a shortage of faculty. With the average age of doctorally-prepared faculty currently 54.1 years, a wave of retirements is expected within the next ten years. To combat the disparity resulting from growing shortage of nurse educators and the increasing need of nurses, the AACN has created an online resource to support nurses considering full- or part-time teaching careers. Called Faculty CareerLink, this information clearinghouse features a nurse educator career profile, academic programs that prepare faculty, financial aid opportunities, and links to faculty development programs.
