Month in Nursing eNotes: January 2004 (go
to archives) OHSU School of Nursing’s nurse midwifery program is pleased to announce OHSU Nurse Midwifery Grand Rounds, beginning February 3. Nurse Midwifery Grand Rounds is a new program from the number one ranked nurse midwifery program in the nation. The Grand Rounds will feature the northwest’s leading midwifery faculty, clinicians, and experts in women’s healthcare, discussing the latest research and evidence-based trends in clinical practice. OHSU Nurse Midwifery
Grand Rounds meets the first Tuesday of every month from 7:30 a.m. to
8:30 a.m. and is open to all who are interested. Midwifery students and
faculty, OB residents, and labor and delivery staff are especially encouraged
to attend. For more information, go to: Kathryn B. Brown is
a family nurse practitioner with a master’s degree in nursing from
OHSU. She also writes a column in the Wallowa County Chieftain about current
healthcare topics in the northwest. One recent topic she covered was direct-to-consumer
drug advertising and how public health campaigns inform people in order
to protect and improve the health of individuals and the community. To
read more about this topic and other topics covered by Brown go to: The new Center for
Health Disparities Research at OHSU School of Nursing was created to wipe
out the huge differences in overall health between the rich and the poor,
between whites and racial and ethnic minorities, and also between urban
and rural people. "There's a great need to focus clinical and community-based
research resources on eliminating health disparities in the Pacific Northwest.
The reduction and eventual elimination of health disparities will only
be achieved in full partnership with racial and ethnic minority populations
and other underserved communities," said Nancy Glass Ph.D., M.P.H.,
R.N., assistant professor and co-director of the new center. To this end,
the center has developed innovative collaborations with community-based
agencies, foundations, academic institutions, local and state public health
agencies, and health care systems with the mission of developing culturally
competent community-academic research collaborations to eliminate health
disparities. To read more about the new OHSU center, go to: Do you know an outstanding
alum of OHSU School of Nursing who you would like to recognize? If so,
please consider nominating this alum for the 2004 Distinguished Alumni
of the Year Award. Nominations are due by February 2, 2004. For more information,
