"My interest and passion center around the emotional, psychological, and professional well-being of Black women. Specifically, I seek to examine how Black women, positioned at the intersection of various systems of oppression (racism, sexism, classism), develop and deal with stress, obesity, depression, and self-esteem. In addition, my research explores the identity development of Black women, specifically when situated in a predominately White environment, and how through that developed identity Black women experience various systems of oppression, which can ultimately effect their health. In regard to educational and health care institutions, my work explores institutional barriers and organizational readiness for the inclusion and expansion of diversity. Stereotypical and prejudicial attitudes abound in both the workplace and educational arenas. The perpetuation of institutional oppression by and among co-workers creates an unhealthy work environment for those in the oppressed group. Moreover, patient care suffers. Through the use of qualitative research methods and a Black feminist perspective, this work will serve to expand our understanding of a traditionally under-researched population and contribute to health care practitioners ability to provide culturally sensitive and appropriate care.

My current research interest include racial identity development, racial socialization, social stigma, Black feminist theory, social and structural inequality and stratification, health policy, and organizational diversity and change."
