"My program of research is to develop and test treatments to improve fibromyalgia symptoms. The core symptom of fibromyalgia is chronic widespread pain. The pain is usually perceived as arising from muscle, however many fibromyalgia patients also report joint pain. Stiffness, worse in the early morning, along with the perception of articular pain, may reinforce the impression of an arthritic condition. Fibromyalgia pain and stiffness typically have a diurnal variation, with a nadir during the hours of about 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Symptoms also wax and wane in intensity over days and weeks; with flares occurring with increased exertion, systemic infections, soft tissue injuries, lack of sleep, cold exposure, restless leg syndrome, bruxism, irritable bowel and bladder and psychological stressors. With this debilitating list of symptoms, it is not surprising that obesity and physical deconditioning are common comorbidities. Additionally, women are disproportionately affected (9:1). Therefore the field is ripe for investigation related to gender discrimination. I am fortunate to work with a world-renowned interdisciplinary team of nurse scientists, physicians, psychologists, methodologists, and physical and occupational therapist. We developed a 10,000 patient database and maintain an active clinical practice in which I see patients as a family nurse practitioner. The team has over 30 years of scholarly investigation and publications. Many are considered thought leaders in the field. Notably, the Oregon team helped determine the American College of Rheumatology 1990 classification criteria, developed the primary outcome questionnaire for fibromyalgia research and described perturbations in the GH/IGF-1 axis. We conduct randomized controlled clinical trials funded by the National Institutes of Health, foundations and industry. At the current time, we are conducting exercise and drug treatment interventions as well as acute dosing and descriptive studies. We are actively seeking collaborators, co-investigators, Ph.D. students, and post-doctoral and rheumatology fellows. We are also committed to creating a productive and scholarly learning environment and continue to grow and diversify our team. If you are interested in joining our team, please contact my project director, Ann Reiner R.N., M.S., Ph.D. Candidate, at 503 494-3811. You are invited to our bimonthly team meetings. We hope you will join us in our fight to legitimize the diagnosis, find effective treatments to manage symptoms, improve functional ability and maximize quality of life."
