Dena Hassouneh, PhD, RN, ANP, PMHNP
"To date, my research has primarily focused on violence against women from marginalized populations with an emphasis on the mental health consequences of cumulative lifetime trauma. I am specifically interested in working with women who face multiple layers of oppression both within and outside of their communities. Through my work in the area
of violence against women, I have become increasingly aware of the need
for culturally appropriate mental health services. As a result, my current
interests are focused on cultural and societal aspects of trauma and women's
mental health. My overall mission is to improve service quality and increase
the availability of culturally appropriate services for women who experience
violence and social oppression. Current projects related to addressing
the need for the development of culturally appropriate mental health services
include a National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research
funded intervention study focused on depressive symptoms in women with
physical disabilities, a Sigma Theta Tau funded qualitative pilot study
of depression and anxiety in Arab Muslim women living in the U.S., and
a Department of Defense funded project focused on family reintegration
following guard deployment." TEACHING Courses Taught during the
