Rick Daniels, RN, Ph.D. received his BSN from the University of Oregon School of Nursing, his MSN from the University of San Diego, and his Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Daniels has been an associate professor for the School of Nursing, Ashland campus, since 1988. His primary responsibilities are teaching theory and clinical courses at the undergraduate level, performing research with a wellness focus, and serving on campus-wide committees. He teaches a variety of acute care didactic nursing courses, such as pathophysiology, adult health and illness, and pharmacology. In addition, Dr. Daniels developed and taught a distance learning course in Pathophysiology from 1994-2000, as well as co-teaching the RN-BSN online Pathophysiology course from 2002-2006. In the clinical settings, he initiated innovative selected clinical immersion courses in the areas of perioperative nursing, intensive care, and emergency health services. Dr. Daniels has also obtained three successive grants with the Department of the Army for initiating wellness programs with Oregon National Guardsmen. In addition, he has written a number of articles in nursing journals, authored three nursing textbooks, and presented posters and presentations at local, regional, and national conferences. Dr. Daniels maintains clinical practice in the Oregon Army National Guard as the State of Oregon Deputy Commander at the rank of Colonel.

Practice

1996-present
Oregon Army National Guard Nurse officer in the position of Colonel. Appointed as the Deputy Commander of
the State of Oregon. This position is appointed by the Oregon State Surgeon and is the commanding officer
over the entire States’ nurse officers. Continue to also be the commander of officers in the State Medical
Teaching Team). This team is responsible for the entire state's medical education (e.g., Combat Medic, Combat
Lifesaver course; Pre-Hospital Trauma Lifesaving Course). This position includes developing and implementing
curriculum, purchasing supplies and administering the budget, and coordinating the supervision, scheduling, and
performance evaluation of the teaching team. In addition, this selected team is immediately activated for
state and national medical emergencies and disasters.

Research

2005-2006. Co-investigator with Dr. Deborah Messacar (PI) awarded OHSU for: Family
Reintegration Following Guard Deployment, funded by the TriService Nursing Research
Program.

2004-2005. Co-investigator with Dr. Heather Young (PI) awarded AHRQ via Asante Health
Systems for: Medication Management: A Closed Computerized Loop. Total budget funded is
$3.2 million.

2002-2005. Principal investigator for Health Promotion and Prevention Initiative (HPPI)
accepted Dec., Title is, "Personal Responsibility Project Replication". Total budget funded is
$15,300.
