When a student is admitted into the RNBS Program, they will receive a copy of the OHSU Registrar's official "Degree Evaluation," showing which non-nursing courses they have received credit for and which they have left to complete. More Information about the Non-Nursing Requirements

Natural Sciences

  • Chemistry: Must be a one-year sequence of inorganic, organic and biochemistry with laboratory. Some schools only offer a laboratory with inorganic and organic, but not biochemistry. Consult your advisor for the appropriate chemistry sequence.
  • College Algebra: Completion of college calculus or a higher mathematics course is sufficient to fulfill this requirement. This is typically Math 111 or above. Intermediate algebra will not suffice.
  • Statistics: Needs to include both descriptive and inferential. If there is a choice between one type or another then take the descriptive. It is not necessary to take two courses in order to get inferential statistics. Statistics may be taken in any department (e.g. math, psych, business, etc.).

Arts and Letters and Humanities

  • Written English/English Composition: Development and support of ideas through the media of written English. This is not required if a previous baccalaureate degree is held.
  • Humanities Electives:  Includes art appreciation or history, music appreciation or history, theater arts or speech, literature, philosophy, women's studies, foreign language or intercultural communication. These are not required if a previous baccalaureate degree is held.

Social Sciences

  • General Psychology: Basic introduction to the field of psychology, inclusive of biologic, cognitive, personal and social development of humans.
  • General Sociology: Basic introduction to the field of sociology, inclusive of application of sociological concepts and perspectives concerning human groups.
  • Human Development: The developmental process of human life covering the life span (birth through death.) Courses that include only infancy or through school age will not suffice.
  • Cultural Anthropology: The study of culture as it relates to human strategies of adaptation. Emphasis on understanding cultural differences and how cultures change in the modern world.

Other Requirements

  • Computer Literacy:  Students are expected to enter the OHSU School of Nursing with certain basic computer skills. Students use a variety of software programs including word processing, e-mail and web browsers. Go to Computer Literacy Checklist for a list of skills you should have to begin with.
  • Computer Hardware and Software:  Students are expected to enter the OHSU School of Nursing with a computer that has a connection to the internet. Go to Computer Requirements for a detailed description of the type of computer hardware and software required.
