More Information about the Non-Nursing Requirements

Anatomy and Physiology: A full sequence of human anatomy and physiology with laboratory, inclusive of all body systems. This sequence must be taken in its entirety.  Note: Chemistry or Biology may be required prior to the A&P sequence at some colleges/universities; please check individual college requirements.

Nutrition: Class should cover biological functions, dietary sources of essential nutrients and the relationship of diet to health.

Microbiology with Lab

Introduction to Genetics:  One course or a module within a course. This can be any human biology course that includes a human genetics component in the course and indicates this inclusion in the college catalog course description. This can include genetics coverage in a Microbiology or Anatomy and Physiology course.

Math 95 or higher: Competency for Math 95 or above must be demonstrated prior to application to the nursing program. Competency may be demonstrated by a math placement test or by successful completion of Math 95 or higher. Note: Math 95 credits are not applicable to credits for the Bachelor’s degree; however, math courses that are 100 or higher may be included in the credits that are applied to the prerequisites and to the degree. The student is advised to consider taking the prerequisite for Statistics in choosing a math course, which is recommended for application and will be required later in the nursing program.

Statistics: Course needs to include both descriptive and inferential components. If there is a choice between one type or another, then take the descriptive. It is not necessary to take two courses in order to get inferential statistics. Statistics may be taken in any department (e.g. Math, Psychology, Business, etc.).

Written English/English Composition plus Technical or Scientific Writing: Coursework should cover the development and support of ideas through the medium of written English. Technical or scientific research writing is typically the third course in this three-course series. Remedial English such as sentence structure and grammar will not be accepted for this requirement. For the Bachelor of Science with a major in nursing standard program, 6 quarter prerequisite credits are not required if a previous baccalaureate degree is held.

Humanities courses (total 9 credits required for graduation):
Coursework can be from any of the following departments: Art Appreciation, Art History, Music Appreciation, Music History, Speech, Theatre Arts, Women’s Studies, Foreign Language, Literature, Philosophy, Linguistics, Communication, Journalism, and Religion.
If the student has not met the Foreign Language Proficiency Requirement, then taking 2 terms of one foreign language at the college level can meet both the Humanities and Foreign Language requirements.

Human Growth and Development: Course should cover the social and psychological developmental process of human life covering the lifespan (birth through death). Courses that include only infancy or through school age will not suffice. This course is typically from the Psychology department.

Social Science courses (total 9 credits required for graduation): Courses can be from any of the following departments: Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Business, and Criminology.

Upper Division (300-400 level) courses in disciplines other than nursing (total 15 credits): This graduation requirement might include a series of courses in one field or a combination of courses from several fields.
General Elective courses: 38 unspecified credits which may include courses taken as part of the associate degree program, physical education courses, upper division courses from other disciplines, etc. as long as they have not been counted toward another requirement. Most associate degree graduates meet this requirement without taking additional courses.

Foreign Language Proficiency Requirement:
Language proficiency is a baccalaureate graduation requirement that can be met by 1) two years of one foreign language in high school, 2) two terms or one semester of one foreign language at the college level, or 3) a language proficiency examination. College level (100 and above) credits in the foreign languages may count toward the 9 credit Humanities requirement or as part of the General Electives requirement. High school language courses and proficiency examination results may not count for the Bachelor’s degree. American Sign Language is an accepted language to meet this requirement.

Basic Computer Literacy: College credit work and or life experience can meet this competency. Students need proficiency in using email, internet searching, word processing and file management.

Computer Hardware and Software: Students are expected to enter the OHSU School of Nursing with a computer running the Microsoft Windows XP operating system and connected to the internet. Students are required to use Microsoft Office 2003 or newer (standard or professional edition) including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. See the Student
Computer Requirements for a detailed description of the type of computer hardware and software needed.
