Description of Gerontological Nursing T32 Training Program

It is clear that the health and illness care of elders is one of, if not the, major public health issue confronting health care researchers and clinicians worldwide. In the next half century, the elderly population of the U.S. is projected to more than double in size from its current 31 million to 80 million, with the 85+ population expected to quadruple in size to 19 million (Hobbs & Damon, 1996).

Kofi Annan, the Director General of the United Nations, calls the graying of the world's population a "silent revolution" that extends beyond demographics--with major "economic, social, cultural, psychological and spiritual implications."

We believe that nurse researchers can best contribute to the health of elders if they have a broad view of the context of health and health care, skills in population based care and research, and experience in the area of health services research and public policy.

What is the goal of the predoctoral and postdoctoral training program?

The goal of the program is to prepare nurse scientists to conduct research and synthesize existing literature that will enhance gerontological nursing science and the quality of care for elders. In addition to research training in gerontological nursing, this program emphasizes training in health services research and public health.

A variety of additional learning opportunities have been developed to assist trainees in meeting the goals of this unique and innovative research training program including:

  • Internship experiences at Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research, State of Oregon Seniors and People with Disabilities
Participation in the conduct of evidence-reviews at the OHSU Evidence-base Practice Center Obtaining a Masters of Public Health
  • What support is available through the training program?

Postdoctoral trainees are supported for 2 or 3 (for those completing a MPH) years of postdoctoral research training. Support includes a stipend (the level depends on the years of research experience) limited funds for tuition and fees, and $800 per year in travel.
