Application Requirements
The following are the requirements for admission into the OHSU School of Nursing Master's Degree Programs. Please see the international applicant web page for additional requirements if you are a resident of a country other than the United States.

Prior Degree
It is expected that applicants have a B.S. in nursing or B.S.N. degree from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission or the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education. The exception is for the Master of Public Health degree program; this program requires a bachelor's degree in any field.

RN Status (MPH applicants excluded)

  • Must be eligible for an Oregon registered nurse license upon application.
  • Must be licensed in the state of Oregon prior to matriculation.
  • May need to have completed at least one year of clinical practice as an RN (depending on individual specialty requirements).

Work Experience
Depending on your program of interest, you may need at least one year of experience as an RN to qualify. Below is a list of programs that require or recommend work experience:

  • Certified Nurse Midwifery - recommended one year of labor and delivery experience.
  • Family Nurse Practicioner - strongly recommended one year of experience as an RN.
  • Nurse Anesthesia - required one year of experience as an RN in a full-time, adult, critical care, ICU setting. Typicaly admitted applicants have two to five years of such experience.
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practicioner - recommended one year of experience as an RN.

Grade Point Average
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Graduate Record Exam (GRE) Scores
GRE scores competitive (typically combined score of 1000 for Verbal and Quantitative sections).

Statistics
Must successfully pass a basic statistics course with a grade of "B" or better within five years prior to entry into the master's program. Go to Oregon Prerequisites Guide and Washington Prerequisites Guide.

There are also additional progression and graduation requirements for the master's programs.

Research Project
OHSU School of Nursing does not have a written thesis requirement in the master's of science or master's of nursing degree programs. Instead, the candidate for the master's of science degree conducts a community service research project within the core course sequence. The master's of nursing requirements do not include a research component.

Residence Course Completion Requirement
Master's students are required to complete no less than 30 hours of the program in residence, and are expected to develop a program of study with the assigned faculty advisor before entering a program. The master's students' full-time course load is nine credit hours.

Academic Standards
It is expected that master's students in good standing will maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.0 in the nursing major.

Time Limit
All requirements must be completed within a period of four years for master's students.

Computer Requirements
School of Nursing students are required to have access to a computer with pre-determined minimum capabilities, independent of the School of Nursing and university resources. All students are required to have minimal computer literacy skills. Please see the Computer Requirements web page for more information.
