NURSE-MIDWIFERY
Whatever
role you seek as an advanced practice nurse, you’ll need knowledge,
skills and experience. You’ll also need to be able to tap into information
systems that help you stay current with today’s fast-paced health
care environment. You’ll find all of this at Oregon Health &
Science University School of Nursing, recognized nationally for excellence.
OHSU’s SoN is ranked among the top 10 graduate schools of nursing
in the country, and ranked first in the country in our Certified Nurse
Midwifery master’s program according to U.S. News and World
Report.
Certified nurse-midwives manage women's health care focusing on pregnancy,
childbirth, postpartum, care of the newborn, and the family planning and
gynecological needs of women. Nurse midwives provide primary care to women
as well as specialty care and support for expecting mothers.
Upon graduation, more than half of all CNMs work primarily in an office
or clinic environment, especially in hospitals or physician practices.
CNMs in Oregon practice in a variety of settings including public health
departments, university hospitals, private hospitals, home birth services,
HMOs, birth centers and private practices. Compared with physicians, CNMs
generally spend more time with patients during prenatal visits and put
more emphasis on providing patient counseling, education, and emotional
support. Most CNMs attend to their patients on a one-on-one basis during
the entire labor and delivery process.
What You Will Study and Learn
The Certified Nurse-Midwifery program at OHSU prepares students to meet
the unique health care needs of women from menarche through menopause.
Students learn to manage common gynecological problems and assist with
family planning, pregnancy, birth and the newborn period. The influences
of family; culture; tradition; social, economic and political forces;
as well as reproductive physiology are studied. The program strives to
prepare compassionate, skilled clinician-scholars willing to address issues
that affect the lives of women.
The faculty in the Nurse-midwifery program have three priorities for their
students: a scientific basis for clinical practice, clinical competence,
and a perspective that views a woman in the context of her family. Each
student is involved in over 150 outpatient visits and completes 30 to
50 births in the course of the program. All faculty in the Nurse-midwifery
program participate in a faculty practice, which serves as the primary
learning site for students. Other clinical opportunities are provided
in community health centers, health maintenance organizations, migrant
health clinics, and private practices. Students receive more than 750
hours of supervised clinical practice in the program. During the final
practicum experience, students help to select their own experiences, which
can be in any appropriate setting where a contract can be negotiated.
