FINANCIAL AID Oregon Health & Science University recognizes that students and their families may have difficulty financing post-secondary education. To ensure that all qualified students have an opportunity to attend OHSU, the university provides financial assistance through the Registrar and Financial Aid Office. There are four general types of financial aid: scholarships, grants, loans and employment. Scholarships and grants are considered gift aid; that is, they do not require employment or repayment. Loans and employment are referred to as self-help. OHSU awards institutional scholarships primarily on the basis of financial need. In addition to OHSU scholarships, many of our students receive assistance from sources outside the university such as foundations, businesses, labor unions, professional organizations and the military. Information regarding outside sources of funding can be obtained from the Registrar and Financial Aid Office, the OHSU SoN scholarship page or any public library. Federal Pell Grants are provided by the federal government on the basis of financial need. Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants are also provided by the federal government and are available to undergraduates without baccalaureate or professional degrees. SEOGs are awarded only to the lowest income students, with first selection based on Federal Pell Grant recipients. Educational loans are the largest type of financial assistance provided at OHSU. Every student who applies for financial aid is offered a loan from at least one loan program and usually from several. Nursing student loans are long-term educational loans for students in nursing. These loans are funded by the federal government. Many students use the fourth type of financial aid, employment, to reduce or avoid the long-term obligations associated with loans. Please contact the Registrar and Financial Aid Office for more information on The Federal Work-Study Program and all other financial aid opportunities. Financial aid can be awarded only to students who have been accepted for admission, so it is important that new students carefully follow all instructions from the Registrar and Financial Aid Office. If you want financial aid, you should be applying for it while applying for admission. This way, the Registrar and Financial Aid Office will be able to notify you promptly after you are admitted. It also is very important that you observe the financial aid application deadlines and preferential filing dates. The Registrar and Financial Aid Office looks forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to campus. For more information on financial aid, a complete listing of the types of financial aid available, and to print all financial aid applications, please call the Registrar and Financial Aid Office at 503-494-7800 or 1-800-775-5460, or go to the OHSU Registrar and Financial Aid web page. Location of Financial Aid Office The Student Financial Aid Office is located in Mackenzie Hall, room 1120. Staff is available to assist students with questions or concerns Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Students may visit the Student Financial Aid Office for a number of reasons: processing deferments for previous student loans, applying for financial assistance, requesting a short-term emergency loan, searching for private scholarships, and by appointment to calculate loan repayments or work out a monthly budget. Students attending OHSU at off-site locations may find it easier to access the office by phone at 1-800-775-5460.
