What is the Post-Baccalaureate Doctoral Program?

The post-baccalaureate doctoral program is a mentored graduate program leading to the doctor of philosophy degree in nursing. The program is designed to support baccalaureate prepared nurses who wish to be nurse scientists. The program will provide the doctoral education needed to be able to launch their post-doctoral research programs early in their nursing careers.

Who is Eligible For the Post-Baccalaureate Doctoral Program?

  • Current nurses with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • Current “senior” undergraduate nursing students who will receive a bachelor’s degree and pass the registered nurse licensure exam prior to the start of the Ph.D. program in the Fall.
  • Must be a licensed RN within the state of Oregon prior to matriculation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a teaching and research career in nursing.

The program is targeted at registered nurses who have graduated from an accredited baccalaureate program in nursing and who are intellectually curious and self-directed learners eager to improve nursing practice through discovery of new knowledge. Admission requirements include a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average, Graduate Record Exam combined scores of 1000 and a score of 4.0 or above on the GRE writing examination. References from three baccalaureate program nursing faculty are preferred. If unavailable, references from current faculty, fellow clinicians and clinical supervisors will be accepted.

What Makes This Program Unique?

The program includes systematic strategies to help support professionals in their development as nurse scientists. For example, clinical experience is encouraged during summers and the early part of the program, and courses have been designed to assist students as they reflect on and integrate that clinical experience throughout the first year. In addition, there are seminars throughout the program designed to provide ongoing support as the students continue to synthesize and integrate what they are learning in class, and in clinical and research activities.

What About the Master’s Degree?

This program does not require a master’s degree for admission. It also does not provide a master’s degree. The program is not designed to prepare nurses for advanced practice. However, graduates of the post-baccalaureate doctoral program may choose to add a master’s degree in a specialty practice at a later time.
