American Nursing Association Code of Ethics - 2001

Because nursing is a profession grounded in a set of ethical principles, applicants for admission to OHSU School of Nursing degree and certificate programs must meet the intent of the following elements of the ANA Code of Ethics (2001) in order to qualify for consideration:

  • The nurse acts to safeguard the client and the public when health care and safety are affected by the incompetent, unethical, or illegal practice of any person.
  • The nurse assumes responsibility and accountability for individual nursing judgments and actions.

The core of these principles will be used in considering applications as follows:

  1. Any tangible evidence of incompetent, unethical or illegal actions on the part of applicants, and/or
  2. Any tangible evidence of a lack of accountability in previous professional activities will be deemed reason for non-admission.
