about portland

Visit Portland, Oregon, and you'll quickly discover why Money rates the "City of Roses" as one of the best American cities to live in. According to Money's editors, Portland won a top ranking by "avoiding urban sprawl and overcrowding," and for "placing a premium on green space, culture and an accessible city center." Travel & Leisure also took notice of Portland with a number 5 ranking on its list of "100 Fantastic Places (and Things)." The magazine's editors say Portland is "reaching new levels of cool," citing the city's restaurants, art galleries, the Pearl District, Portland Art Museum, and Saturday Market.

The Oregonian with their headline "Destination PDX: A Youth Culture Convergence" reported that Portland had the largest increase, of the 20-34 year old population, of any West Coast city during the last decade.

To encourage our first year residents to get out and explore the region, Laurie, our residency coordinator, promotes a Get-a-Life contest which rewards the resident that is able to get to the most sites, events, and activities during the year. This "competition" encourages planning time away from residency and teaches the importance of work-play balance in the profession.
