Clinical research is an important component of the Departmentâs research activity. Currently, there are more than 80 active clinical trials and . This activity has steadily increased in recent years, and is expected to grow even further with the expansion of the Pediatric Clinical Research Office (PCRO).

Mission:
To facilitate the planning, design, coordination, performance, and tracking of clinical research in children according to local, federal, and international guidelines & laws.
Goals:
- Investigate the pharmacology of novel therapeutic agents in children
- Increase the overall quantity and quality of clinical trials and especially participation in NIH-sponsored trials at DCH (examples of how clinical trials can foster career development).
- Partner with OCTRI to develop translational research in pharmacogenomics and pharmacoproteomics
- Collaborate with community pediatricians to conduct clinical research
- Provide a milieu for educating health professionals about pediatric clinical research and clinical trials
- Attract inquiries for study participation from academic colleagues and industry partners
- Participate in creation of a Pediatric General Clinical Research Center (CTRC) as part of the CTSA grant

Recent Accomplishments:
- Coordinated 22 clinical trials in FYâ06
- Recruited experienced study coordinators to the PCRO staff
- Coordinating studies in stem cell transplantation in adults & children
- Developing a database for the PCRO
- Increasing collaboration with adult investigators by conducting clinical trials involving children and young adults
- Increasing collaboration with the Clinical Trials Office (CTO) & GCRC (now
CTRC)
New Clinical Trials:
- Defibrotide for the treatment of severe hepatic veno-occlusive disease in hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients (E. Nemecek)
- Evaluation of the safety, efficacy, and pharmacokinetics of micardis (telimisartan) in children and adolescents with hypertension after of four weeks of treatment (A. Al-Uzri)
- Pharmacokinetics & pharmacodynamics of 2 dose levels of Pantoprazol Sodium Enteric-Coated Spheriod Supension in infants 1 - 11 mths w/presumed GERD (Y. Eroglu)
- Phase 3 Trial to assess the safety of Tobracmycin Inhalation Powder (TIP) compared to TOBI in Cystic Fibrosis subjects (M. Wall).
