Lab Members

 

Michael Powers, MD, is a native of Oregon, having attended high school in Hillsboro and graduating from Portland State University in 1981 with a BS in Biology with Honors. He earned his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1985. He completed his pediatric residency at OHSU in 1988, which was followed by fellowship training in pediatric pulmonology at OHSU. He was awarded a Physician Scientist Award (K11) under the mentorship of Dr. James Rosenbaum in 1991 and joined the faculty at OHSU in the Departments of Pediatrics and Ophthalmology. He continues to be an active clinical member of the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine.

Dr. Powers' laboratory studies during the 1990s focused on the role of cytokines and growth factors in eye and lung disease. He was also part of a collaborative research group that characterized mast cells as a major source of bFGF in chronic inflammation in the lung, eye, and joint as well as cutaneous hemangioma. Dr. Powers' research is currently focused on the role of apoptosis in the regulation of vascular regression in pathologic angiogenesis using a mouse model of oxygen induced retinopathy. The Powers laboratory is currently supported by funding by the National Eye Institute. His clinical interests and expertise include rare pediatric interstitial lung diseases. Dr. Powers is a member of the American Thoracic Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the International Society for Ocular Cell Biology, the American Society of Investigative Pathology, and the North American Vascular Biology Organization. He is currently an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Ophthalmology at OHSU. His hobbies include stargazing, sports enthusiast, microbrews, and as a member of a physician based rock band.

 

Michael Davies graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1999 with a BS in Biochemistry. He joined the Powers lab in the summer of 1999 and has become a senior member of the research team and an invaluable contributor the design, execution, analysis, and presentation of the research projects. Mike is the past recipient of a NEI travel grant and recently received a Casey Eye Institute Young Investigator Award for his work in examining the role of Ephrin ligands and Eph receptors in endothelial cell apoptosis and vascular tuft regression. Mike participates as a "chemo pal" at Doernbecher Children's Hospital at OHSU through the Children's Cancer Association. Mike also enjoys spending time with his family, kayaking, marathon running, soccer and the Detroit Red Wings.

 

Kristin Hubert, MD, graduated from Wellesley College inWellesley, MA with a BA in Mathematics in 1998. She completed her medical school education at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA in 2003. Kristin was an intern and 2nd year pediatric resident at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston (Harvard Medical School) and then completed her pediatric training as a 3rd year resident at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center, Seattle, WA in 2006. Kristin started her fellowship training in neonatal-perinatal medicine at OHSU in 2006 and joined the Powers lab in the fall of 2006. Kristin's current project involves examining the role of TRAIL (TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand) and its receptors in normal and hyperoxia-exposed retinal tissues. TRAIL-deficient mice will be examined to determine if vascular tuft regression is altered in the absence of TRAIL in a model of retinopathy of prematurity. Dr. Hubert has been recently named a N. L. Tartar Research Fellow at OHSU to support her current research project. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her German shepherd and exploring new restaurants in Portland.

 

Andrew Stempel, graduated from Linfield College in 2006 with a BS in Biology. (Deans List 2006). While at Linfield, Andrew was a varsity track athlete in the pole vault. He joined the Powers lab in the Fall of 2006 and is participating in all of the ongoing research projects. Prior to joining the Powers lab Andrew was a conservation educator at the Oregon Zoo. Andrew has also been a volunteer on medical missions to Antigua Guatemala. His hobbies include SCUBA diving, skiing, surfing, and backpacking.
