Graduate Medical Education

Graduate medical education is one of the central missions of Oregon Health & Science University. Graduate training programs are offered in virtually all fields of medicine, as well as oral/maxillofacial surgery.

OHSU and the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center are the major clinical teaching facilities of OHSU for undergraduate and graduate medical education. The patient care and teaching programs at the University and the Portland VAMC are under the direction and supervision of OHSU faculty. House staff participate in the care of patients in these hospitals and gain additional experience in community hospitals, which have affiliated teaching programs under the direction of the OHSU School of Medicine.

The Office of Graduate Medical Education coordinates house staff appointments and assignments. The office also assists in assuring excellence in the training programs and in serving prospective, current and past house staff.

All graduate medical education programs offered by OHSU are approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or other accrediting bodies or boards specific to respective programs.

Detailed information regarding graduate medical education for a particular program or residency can be obtained by contacting the appropriate program director or coordinator.

A number of clinical and research fellowships are available. Applications are submitted directly to the department chairs or the designated program directors.

House Officer Retirement Benefit

Please help by doing your part to ensure that all of the residents and fellows receive their full 3% retirement benefit this year. Each year we are tasked with one or more service excellence goal that we must fulfill in order to increase our retirement earnings from 1.5% to 3%.  This is about $700 in the bank for each resident (and thousands by the time you retire)Last year we did not meet our goals and we all lost the money (1.5% of the 3% available). The year before that we got it (strong work senior residents). Now we have yet another shot.

The primary goal for this year is to increase the frequency with which residents report safety incidents, such as medication errors or near misses in hopes of developing system improvements to prevent similar events from leading to patient harm in the future. There will also be a short lecture outlining the goals at several of the larger departmental gatherings. The powerpoint presentation for this lecture is attached.  We are also currently discussing a possible goal related to improving the safety of the cross cover sign-out process.

Goal # 1: Resident Safety Event Reporting

Currently 0.9% of reported events are done so by residents

Goal is to increase 0.9% to 5%

This projects to be 240 resident reported events per year or about 20 per month (to be measured from September 2008 - April 2009).

If every clinical resident or fellow reports one safety event in the next 8 months, we will far surpass this goal!
