MEDICAL STUDENT TEACHING

Summer Observership

  • Prior to even starting medical school, incoming first year students spend one week living in the home of a rural family physician and observing office practice for an indepth exposure to medical care and the lifestyle of the profession.
  • Involves approximately 40 family physicians throughout the state for one week in early August.

Rural Family Medicine Experience

  • One to two week experience during the summer between a student's first and second years.

Principles of Clinical Medicine (Years 1 & 2)

  • Two year longitudinal integrative curriculum with weekly seminars and clinical experiences.

  • Requires approximately 200 preceptors from the greater metropolitan area for weekly half-day experiences and 66 volunteer faculty members per term to facilitate small group experiences.

  • Continuity Preceptor: 1 Monday-Friday afternoon clinic per week.

  • Small Group Facilitator: 2 hours per week at OHSU for approximately 10 weeks.

  • Patient Exam Tutor: 2 hours per week at OHSU for approximately 10 weeks.

Family Medicine Clerkship (Year 3)

  • Required third-year rotation involving Portland area practices in which the principles and skills of family physicians are taught.

  • Involves over 25 preceptors at 15 practice locations. Preceptors commit to five-week blocks, with students in clinic eight-half days per week.

  • Clerkship Preceptor: 5 to 20 half-days per five-week rotation.

  • Patient Management Rounds: 2-3 hours per session; 5 sessions per each five-week rotation (no session during third week of rotation) = 12-15 hours total.

  • Didactive Interactive Seminars: One or two 1.5-hour sessions per day

  • Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs): 1 afternoon, 1-5 p.m. Volunteer community faculty invited to serve as faculty evaluators.

Rural Community Health Clerkship (Year 3)

  • Required third-year rotation involving rural community physicians from family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics. Students are exposed to community-oriented primary care and to role models for rural health care.

  • Involves almost 50 preceptors at 20 sites. Preceptors commit to orchestrating a five-week block of time which includes inpatient and outpatient experiences as well as introduction to community issues.

Rural Family Medicine Elective (Year 4)

  • The goal of the rural elective is to provide an opportunity for OHSU students to participate in the total experience of private practice with family physicians in various communities in Oregon. This experience is expected to provide students with information that is helpful in making decisions relative to their future careers in medicine.

  • Three - four week experience with preceptor, which allows student to integrate themselves into the practice and experience the full breath of family medicine.

RESIDENT TEACHING

Residency Elective

  • Residents have elective time available in the second and third year and may choose to schedule an elective with a practicing physician.

  • Volunteer faculty physicians may choose to list their practice as an elective choice for residents.
