Fourth Year Subinternship in Family Medicine

We offer a Family Medicine Subinternship for fourth-year OHSU students and students from other schools

Students spend four weeks completing an intensive experience in which students work closely with both faculty and residents, caring for patients of a wide variety. Students spend half the rotation caring for patients in the inpatient setting and the other half caring for patients in one of three model family practice center. Inpatient care includes care of adults and children, and may include maternal and neonatal care, labor management, emergency room care, and surgical care as situations arise. Outpatient care involves seeing a wide range of patients, including children, adults, geriatrics and pregnancy care. Students will work with a senior resident or faculty member and will see patients independently, observe their preceptors seeing patients and also be observed by their preceptor performing histories and physicals.

Objectives include:

  • Learn how the principles of Family Medicine are applied in both the inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Work with patients hospitalized from Model Academic Family Practice Centers and clinics operated by County Health Departments.
  • Sharpen presentation skills by researching and presenting two clinical topics during the four week block.
  • Hone the compendium of clinical and management skills necessary to be a successful family medicine intern.

Fourth Year Rural Family Medicine

Students spend 4 weeks working with a Family Physician in a Rural Oregon community. Students are encouraged to become as involved as possible in their preceptor's life during the rotation.

Objectives include

  • Learn the role of the Family Physician in the community.
  • Develop outpatient care skills.
  • Learn core principles of Family Medicine.
