SALARY & BENEFITS
Overview
Our residents are employed by the Oregon Health & Science University system and, as such, salary is determined by the OHSU department of Graduate Medical Education. For the 2008-9 academic year, salary is $45,600 (PGY1), $47,800 (PGY2), or $50,000 (PGY3) per year.
Residents are given an “allowance” from OHSU applied, before taxes, for insurance benefits including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance. Unused portions of this money can be returned to the resident as salary. Many single residents have approximately $100 per month available to them as extra salary through this program. Those with families may find themselves kicking in an additional $20-50 to provide coverage for the entire family.
In addition to the above, residents get allowances of Step III or equivalent reimbursed (Intern year, approximately $670), $750 (2nd year) or $1000 (3rd year) per year for CME purposes that may include conference expenses, books, or for other educational purposes. Fees associated with courses such as ACLS, NALS, PALS, ATLS and ALSO are also covered by the GME Department. The hospital provides access to UpToDate.com.
There is parking available to residents either by the year or by the month at the discounted rate of $55 per month. This can be paid through payroll deduction or cash. Additionally, our residents receive a meal allowance to apply to food expenses while on overnight call.
Many housing opportunities exist—both to rent and to buy. Most residents pay $500-700 per month. About one-third of our residents end up buying houses during their residency. Some residents live near their ‘home’ clinic, but many live all over the city of Portland, choosing the area that most appeals to them.
Residents have 3 weeks of vacation per year which must be taken in one week blocks and cannot be carried over to the next year. Some of our rotations are limited to few or no vacations so choosing a rotation line which suits your needs is important. There is also 5 days CME time available each year. Residents also have 15 days of sick time per year which can be carried over from year to year.
Our program has a jeopardy system in place to provide coverage for essential services when, in the course of residency training, events such as personal/family illness or a continuity delivery occur and require a short-term absence from scheduled duties. Second and Third year residents each take approximately 2 weeks of jeopardy call per year to cover for any resident needing to be away unexpectantly.
Each year in January or February, we host a weekend retreat at various nearby locations to address residency, clinic and training issues and to allow residents and their families to relax, have fun and deepen the bonds with each other.
There are opportunities to moonlight in Portland and in some of our rural sites. The salary is generally $40-$50 per hour. Resident may moonlight provided they follow our moonlighting policies and have an unrestricted license which they can apply for after their internship year.
