Overview and Objectives

The Master of Public Health Degree Program combines broad training in public health with specific training in one of the specialty tracks offered by the three participating universities: Oregon State University, Oregon Health Sciences University and Portland State University. The M.P.H. program was approved by the Oregon State Board of Higher Education in October 1993. The program is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health.

The mission of the M.P.H. program is to provide innovative leadership in the fields of education, research and service in public health throughout Oregon, regionally and internationally. Graduates of the program will obtain a general understanding of the areas of knowledge basic to public health:
  • biological, physical and chemical factors which affect the health of communities;
  • concepts and methods of relevant social and behavioral sciences;
  • community and individual educational strategies designed to promote health and to prevent disease and disability;
  • distribution of diseases or conditions in susceptible populations and factors that influence this distribution;
  • collection, storage, retrieval, analysis and interpretation of health data;
  • planning, policy analysis and administration of health programs.
Residents in the family medicine/preventive medicine track will be required to enroll in either the Epidemiology/Biostatistics track or the Health Administration/Health Policy track of the Oregon M.P.H. program. Both tracks provide opportunities for residents to gain an understanding of how to identify and meet the health needs of populations. Courses in the epidemiology/biostatistics track emphasize the use of quantitative methodology for analyzing and addressing health problems to support basic and applied research in public health and health care, whereas courses on the PSU track provide experience and knowledge in health management and policy.

The core curriculum offered to all students in the M.P.H. program is intended to provide an understanding of the statistical, epidemiological, political, behavioral, environmental science, and organizational basis of public health and of the health care system in general. The epidemiology and biostatistics concentration focuses on providing students with epidemiological and statistical reasoning skills and competency in studying the distribution and dynamics of disease in populations, in evaluating health care programs, and in conducting clinical, behavioral and health services research.
