Family Medicine / Preventive Medicine
Health Management and Policy
This track offers training in health management and policy in order to prepare graduates for a wide range of careers that includes health services administration, planning, policy, evaluation and consulting. The goal of the program is to provide leadership skills in the fields of education, research, and service that apply to all aspects of public health. At Portland State University, the program of study for the MPH degree in health management and policy involves a total of 61 credits of work and is organized around the following five components:
Coursework:
- The MPH core of 16 credits, common to all tracks in the state-wide Oregon MPH program, which includes courses on epidemiology, biometry, health systems organization, environmental health, and principles of health behavior.
- The health administration and policy concentration core of 15 credits, consists of courses in health care economics, strategic management, organizational theory and behavior, health policy, and values and ethics in health services.
- Twelve credits of health administration and policy concentration electives selected by the student from among 21 credits of available courses.
- Twelve credits of other electives the student selects from a wide range of pertinent courses.
- Six credits of PA 509 Organizational Experience, which serves as an in integrative, culminating field experience at or near completion of the student's program of study.

Epidemiology and Biostatistics
Courses in this track emphasize the use of quantitative methodology for analyzing and addressing health problems to support basic and applied research in public health and population based health care.
The core curriculum offered to all students in the MPH program is intended to provide an understanding of the statistical, epidemiological, political, behavioral, environmental science, and organizational basis of public health and health care delivery.
The study of Epidemiology and biostatistics provides students with analytical and reasoning skills which result in a competency for understanding the distribution and dynamics of diseases within populations. These skills are most advantageous for careers in research, study design, public health, grant writing and academic medicine.
