Michelle Adler, MD, MPH
Instructor, OHSU Family Medicine at Clackamas County

[Michelle Adler, MD, MPH]
Michelle R. Adler, MD, MPH is an Instructor of Family Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University. Clinically, she practices full-scope family medicine, including obstetrics, at Clackamas County Community Health Division in Oregon City, OR.

She completed medical school at University of California, San Diego, a joint Family Medicine/Preventive Medicine Residency at OHSU, and a Masters of Public Health degree from Portland State University. Dr. Adler is bilingual in Spanish and English.

Her interests include maternal and child health and immigrant health care. She has been one of the leaders in a statewide effort to improve prevention of perinatal HIV transmission by co-sponsoring legislation to improve prenatal HIV testing and co-chairing a committee at OHSU to implement rapid HIV testing on labor and delivery. Further, Dr. Adler is spearheading efforts to bring the Centering Pregnancy model of group prenatal and well-child care to Clackamas County.

Outside of work, Dr. Adler enjoys theater, traveling, playing soccer, hiking, and cooking.

David Buckley, MD
Assistant Professor, Oregon Rural Practice-based Research Network

[David Buckley, MD]
Dr. Buckley grew up in Colorado and moved to Chicago for undergraduate studies. He received a Bachelor's Degree in anthropology from Northwestern University, and attended the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where he received his M.D. in 1993. He completed a residency in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of New Mexico. After residency training, he entered practice at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic in New Hamphsire. In 1998, he moved to Portland, Oregon, and worked with Kaiser Permanente until 2001, when he joined the OHSU Department of Family Medicine as an assistant professor.

Dr. Buckley completed an NIH NRSA post-doctoral fellowship in primary care research, which included work on an MPH degree in epidemiology and biostatistics. He is currently pursuing his research interests as a Research Investigator with the Oregon Rural Practice-based Research Network (ORPRN). He is interested in preventive health services; nutritional epidemiology; cancer epidemiology; medical anthropology; and health services research, particularly among under-served populations. He has done clinical work and research in Ireland and India.

He enjoys juggling, skiing, hiking, Irish traditional music, 20th-century history, old Hollywood movies, and travel.

Clark Campbell, PhD
Adjunct Assistant Professor

Clark earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the Graduate School of Clinical Psychology, Western Seminary in 1983. From there, he completed his residency at Dammasch State Hospital in Wilsonville, Oregon in 1984. Clark has held an appointment as Adjunct Assistant Professor in Family Medicine, and has been involved with teaching residents and providing patient services since 1989. Currently, Dr. Campbell is Chair of the Department of Psychology at George Fox University, as well as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at OHSU. He also serves as Director of the Graduate School of Clinical Psychology, Director of the Undergraduate Psychology program, and Director of the Health and Counseling Service Center.

Patricia Carney, PhD
Professor, Director of Research, Associate Director for Population Studies at OHSU Cancer Institute

[Patricia Carney, PhD]
Patricia A. Carney, PhD is currently Professor of Family Medicine, and Associate Director for Population Studies at the OHSU Cancer Institute. Dr. Carney received her PhD from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA in 1994. Her doctoral training includes two specialty areas: Health Services Research (Public Health and Community Medicine) and Educational Psychology. Several studies have been funded by the National Cancer Institute or the Agency for Research in Healthcare Quality.

Dr. Carney is also involved in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery and Obstetrics & Gynecology. She has led or contributed to over 85 publications in both these areas of research.

Kathryn Chappelle, MA
Assistant Professor, Director of Curriculum Development, Predoctoral Education

Kathryn graduated in 1975 with a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Oregon and a B.A. in Education and English from Portland State University in 1982. She taught high school English and French for several years in the communities of Seaside, Oregon; Estacada, Oregon; and Battleground, Washington. She went on to earn an M.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Chicago, where she took a position in the Department of Continuing Education as publications editor and curriculum administrator. She came to the OHSU School of Medicine Dean's Office in 1992, where she played a key role in the development of the innovative Principles of Clinical Medicine curriculum and acted as the PCM course administrator. She was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Family Medicine in 1998 as Instructor and Director of Curriculum Development in. Her personal interests include writing, bicycling, and Jungian psychology.

Justin Denny, MD, MPH
Assistant Professor, Director of OHSU Joint Family Medicine/Public Health and Preventive Medicine Residency

[Justin Denny, MD, MPH]
Justin Denny received his doctorate of medicine in May 1998 from Eastern Virginia Medical School and a bachelor of arts from the University of Virginia. Prior to this, he was raised overseas, worked with the US embassy in the Philippine Islands and as a teacher in Caracas, Venezuela.

After completing a residency in family practice at Oregon Health and Science University, Justin became a Chief Resident in Preventive Medicine at OHSU from July 2001 to July 2002. During this time, he worked with the deputy medical director of the Portland/Vancouver Veterans Administration and completed a master’s degree in public health. He has taught global health at Portland State University and has dual appointments OHSU in the departments of Family and Public Health/Preventive Medicine. He is the Residency Director for both the Combined Family Medicine-Preventive Medicine as well as Preventive Medicine Residency Programs while seeing patients as well. He serves as the Health Officer for both the Wasco/Sherman Health Department in The Dalles, Oregon and the Oregon Columbia Health District-Public Health Authority, in St. Helens, Oregon.

His passions include spending time with his wife and 5 year old daughter, running, music, travel and pursing a life rich with voluntary simplicity.

John Heintzman, MD
Instructor, OHSU Family Medicine at Clackamas County

[John Heintzman, MD]
John D. Heintzman, MD is a graduate of OHSU Family Medicine Residency. He received his Doctor of Medicine at Temple University.

John grew up outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he became forever entrenched as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He journeyed to the University of Michigan where he received his Bachelor's of Science in psychology.

He is Instructor for OHSU Family Medicine at Clackamas County.

John and his wife, Melissa like to travel, ski, hike, eat good food, and watch sunrises. John aspires to be well read, an award-winning photographer, be able to grill 3 meals a day, and have a sense of rhythm.

Mary Masterson, MPH, MPA
Instructor

Ms. Masterson received her dual-master degrees in Public Health and Public Administration from Portland State University in 1996. She received her bachelor’s in dental hygiene from OHSU in 1978.

She provided clinical dental hygiene services in private dental practices prior to working at OHSU’s School of Dentistry in 1986. She assisted in implementing a dental service at a local long-term facility in 1983. She managed the OHSU School of Dentistry’s Faculty Dental Practice prior to joining the Department of Family Medicine.

She holds a faculty appointment of Instructor in the Department of Family Medicine. She assisted the Department with the planning and implementation of its videoconferencing systems. She has been an information technology consultant for several of the department’s grants and provided database and website expertise for the Oregon Rural Practice-based Research Network (ORPRN).

Ms. Masterson is the creator and program manager for the OHSU FM Adoption Health Services program that was established in early 2006. She has first-hand experience with the adoption process as an adult Korean adoptee and adoptive mother of two Chinese daughters.

She is also assisting the interim residency director with several quality improvement evaluation projects.

Her professional interests include adoption research and utilization of information technology for research and education.

Her personal interests include community service, participating in adult adoptee and adoption group activities, working on the computer, and spending time with her family.

Alan Melnick, MD, MPH
Associate Professor, Clark County Health Officer

Alan Melnick, M.D., M.P.H., is the Director of the Joint Residency in Family Medicine/Public Health & General Preventive Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University and the Health Officer for Clackamas County, Oregon. From 1981 to 1989, Dr. Melnick provided primary care at the Multnomah County Health Department in Portland, Oregon. Since 1989, Dr. Melnick has served as Health Officer for the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Health District in Washington (1989-1991), Washington County, Oregon (1990-1996) and currently, Clackamas County, Oregon (1996-present). From 1999 to 2001, Dr. Melnick also served as the Medical Director for the Clackamas County Community-Migrant Health Center. Over the past ten years, Dr. Melnick has had several health policy roles. Since 1991, he has served on the Executive Committee of the Oregon Conference of Local Health Officials, presently as Vice-Chair. Dr. Melnick is past Chair of the Oregon Governor’s Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs and a member of the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) Information Technology Committee. Dr. Melnick is a year-three (1993-94) Scholar in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sponsored National Public Health Leadership Institute and in 2000-2001 served as Chair of its alumni association, the Public Health Leadership Society. He is a 1999 Fellow of the U.S. Public Health Service Primary Care Policy Fellowship.

Dr. Melnick is interested in innovative approaches to community health assessment and improvement. As Clackamas County Health Officer, he participated in a NACCHO pilot project to test new community health assessment software, APEXPH98. In addition, he helped develop a prototype of an APEX-compatible Geographic Information Systems (GIS) application for community health assessment, and using a Northwest Health Foundation grant, recently developed an internet-based public health GIS application in Clackamas County. Relevant publications include a textbook, “Introduction to Geographic Information Systems for Public Health,” published in March of 2002 by Jones and Bartlett as well as articles and a book chapter related to public health uses of GIS. Dr. Melnick recently received NIH (NICHD – National Institute of Child Health and Human Development) funding for a study of the effectiveness of an innovative method of increasing access to contraceptives as well as Northwest Health Foundation funding for a study of the effectiveness of a disease self-management program for homebound elderly with arthritis.

Internationally, since June 2000, Dr. Melnick has served as a member of the American International Health Alliance (AIHA) healthcare partnership between the Narimonav Health District in Baku, Azerbaijan and the Oregon Health & Science University Department of Family Medicine. Beginning in October 2000, Dr. Melnick became a member of the Caucuses Region Steering Committee for the Development of Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines, and since December 2001 has been a member of the Region-Wide Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines Advisory Committee, both sponsored by the American International Health Alliance. In these roles, Dr. Melnick has conducted workshops and presentations in developing evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and primary care quality improvement projects in Tbilisi, Georgia, Moscow, Russia and Kiev, Ukraine. Dr. Melnick is Board Certified in two specialties: Family Medicine and Public Health & General Preventive Medicine.

Rebecca Rdesinski, MSW
Research Instructor

Rebecca Rdesinski, MSW, received her Social Work degree from the University of Georgia in 1999 where she did research on the effects welfare reform in Georgia. Rebecca joined OHSU Family Medicine as a Research Associate on September 15, 2002. Rebecca coordinates community-based research on the effectiveness of home-delivered contraception.

Rebecca also enjoys her international work in Honduras, where she does fundraising and gets her hands dirty while installing gravity fed potable water systems in remote mountain villages. Currently she is working towards a Masters degree in Public Health.

Outside of work, Rebecca enjoys rock climbing, soccer, hiking, traveling, and cooking.

Elizabeth Steiner, MD
Research Assistant Professor

Dr. Steiner earned her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1991. She completed her residency at OHSU, and was hired in 1999 as Assistant Professor. For the first two years on faculty, she practiced full-scope family medicine, and served as co-director of the Principles of Clinical Medicine course in the medical school. She now focuses exclusively on research related to medical education methodology, in particular centered on using flexible modalities to teach appropriate antibiotic use and prevention and early detection of cancer.

Her personal interests include outdoor activities, leading Girl Scouts, reading, classical and modern music, and bird-watching.

Anita Taylor, MAEd
Associate Professor, OHSU Director of Career Advising

[Anita Taylor, MAEd]
Anita graduated from Bryn Mawr College with an B.A. in Sociology and from Wake Forest University with a master's degree in education and counseling. She is an Associate Professor and serves as the director of Volunteer Faculty Outreach and co-advisor to the Family Medicine Interest Group for the Department of Family Medicine. The author of "How to Choose a Medical Specialty,", 4th edition, she is the OHSU Director of Career Advising for the medical students. She also has a special interest in physician and medical family life planning as well as faculty development.

She and her husband, Robert B. Taylor, M.D. have 2 children and 4 grandchildren.
