ABOUT OHSU

OHSU Family Medicine/Preventive Medicine Residency Program, Portland

The Combined Family Medicine & Preventive Medicine Residency at Oregon Health Sciences University is a university- and community-based four-year training program that aspires to excel in patient care, population-based medicine, teaching and research. This innovative residency track was developed through a collaboration between the Department of Family Medicine, the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and the Clackamas County Public Health Division in 1995. The residency admits two applicants each year and graduates are board eligible in both Family and Preventive Medicine in just 4 years. Graduates of the program are leaders in academic family medicine, medical management, research, global health, and at local and state public health agencies. Most combine research, management and other population-based activities with clinical and public health practice. The curriculum accommodates residents who enter with or without an MPH, as residents entering without an MPH will have an opportunity to earn this degree as part of the training program.

We believe family medicine training that includes population-based practice will give graduates the tools they need to function effectively in health care systems of the 21st century. Graduates will have career opportunities in all aspects of health care, from the care of individual patients and families to health policy and planning.
