Since 1987 OHSU Family Medicine has sponsored a pre-matriculation observership experience for entering OHSU medical students in which they spend a week with rural family physicians before beginning their first year. Our department administers the Principles of Clinical Medicine course in Years 1 and 2; as part of this course, students spend one-half day a week in the offices of practicing physicians in the Portland area. Our third-year required Family Medicine Clerkship is now in its sixth year. In the third year required Rural Community Health Clerkship, 80 percent of the students spend six-weeks in a rural family medicine. We offer a Family Medicine Subinternship for fourth-year OHSU students and individuals from other schools. Our Family Medicine Student Interest Group is very active and sends 12-15 students to the National Congress of Student Members each year. We also have a variety of Teaching Opportunities for community physicians both in their own practices and at the University.
