OHSU FAMILY MEDICINE Family Medicine Interest Group
Family Medicine
Family Medicine is the medical specialty which is concerned with the total health care of the individual and the family. It is the specialty in breadth which integrates the biological, clinical, and behavioral sciences. The scope of family medicine is not limited by age, sex, organ system, or disease entity.* Training in the academic discipline of Family Medicine prepares family physicians to practice in the board variety of situations and settings.

Family physicians receive training in:
- Medical care of children & adults
- Prenatal care, including delivery
- Ambulatory & hospital surgical procedures
- Behavioral & psychological intervention
- Emergency care
- Sports medicine and common orthopedic problems
- Laboratory medicine & radiology
- Health promotion, disease prevention & patient education
The Family Medicine Interest Group is a group of medical students who share an interest in a career in the specialty of Family Practice.

- Baby Beeper Program
- Porluck dinners and Post-Interview dinner for 3rd & 4th year students.
- "Strolling Through the Match"
- Procedural Workshops
- Travel to state and national conferences
- Monthly meetings with presentations on a variety of Family Medicine related topics
- Graduation Mentor Dinner
Community Involvement - Tar Wars - tobacco education program for 5th grade students
- SW Community Clinic - clinic to srve indigent ptients
- Visits to encourage students to consider careers in family medicine
- College outreach program
- Rural high school outreach program
Leadership Many opportunities are available for leadership through FMIG at the local, state, and even national level, including: - FMIG offices, such as co-chair, secretary, treasurer, class representative, membership chair and committee chairs
- Membership on AAFP committees (national level)
- Membership on OAFP committees (state level)
- Delegate roles at state, regional and national meeting
Membership A one-time payment of $15 will cover membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP), and FMIG. In addition, for the entire four years of medical school, members receive both the American Family Physician (the clinical journal published by the AAFP) and the FMIG newsletter, which keeps students informed of FMIG activities. You will be billed directly by AAFP.
