The Robert B. Taylor, M.D. Society

Many of the Department's achievements have been made possible by private contributions. To encourage broad-based support, we have created the Robert B. Taylor, M.D. Society to recognize donors who make a generous, ongoing commitment to our continued success. The Society honors the Department's second chairman, who was instrumental in expanding our mission. Gifts from the Taylor Society members play a critical role in ensuring that existing initiatives and significant new ones can succeed:

Clerkship and Observership programs that give medical students clinical experience in the community practices of family physicians

Expansion of our rural programs to encourage graduates to enter small town and rural practice

Exploration of key research questions through department fellowships

Development of continuing education programs to help family physicians sharpen their skills and acquire new ones

As the Department continues to reach for ambitious goals, significant annual gifts will be crucial. Your membership in the Robert B. Taylor, M.D. Society will give you the satisfaction of helping to meet these pressing needs by contributing directly to the work of our faculty; to our residents, students and fellows; and to our many innovative programs.

Special Purpose Donation/Accounts

The department has a number of accounts in the OHSU Foundation which support specific activities in the department. These include the following:

The Family Medicine Advancement Fund is designed to strengthen family medicine in Oregon. This fund pays for student and resident travel to national meetings of the American Academy of Family Physicians, provides seed money for fundable projects, and helps support our volunteer faculty enrichment programs.

The Anita D. Taylor, M.A.Ed., Travel Fund pays for medical student travel to the National Conference of Family Practice residents and medical students in Kansas City, Missouri. Medical student leadership has been enhanced by this experience. In 2002 an OHSU student was elected Student Director to the AAFP National Board of Directors.

The Family Medicine Residents' Fund supports resident related activities such as the annual retreat, professional membership association fees and special programs such as the Medicine and Literature Group.

The Family Medicine Student Interest Group Fund supports outstanding students with an interest in family medicine through a variety of activities including student seminars, workshops, lecture series, and public service activities.

The Merle Pennington, M.D.Fund supports the annual Merle Pennington, M.D. Lectures in Family Medicine.

The Peter Goodwin, M.D., Travel Fund provides the opportunity for residents and students to travel to the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians annual meeting, honoring Dr. Goodwin's past-presidency of this organization.

The Robert B. Taylor, M.D. Fund for Rural Medicine provides ongoing support for rural rotations for medical students and family practice residents, and allows the Department to pursue new initiatives such as a rural medicine fellowship, a rural research network, and "distant learning" via web technology.

The Meg Hayes, MD Clinical Skills Enhancement Fund supports education and training for employees of the OHSU Family Medicine at Scappoose Clinic.

The Family Practice Discretionary Fund supports various activities that fulfill the mission of the Department, such as cross cultural training, the Summer Observership, and the development of new programs in the curriculum.
